Aged for 2 years in oak barriques and demi-muids, followed by a shorter period in large botti casks. Aged for a minimum of 4 months in bottles before release. 14% alcohol. Tasted in Barbi Brunello 2010-1968 vertical.
Dark, moderately opaque and surprisingly evolved figgy hue with a mature, slightly syrupy brown hue. Surprisingly evolved and even somewhat tired nose with quite tertiary aromas of pungent soy sauce and rancio, some figgy tones, a little bit of sweet, wizened red cherry, light notes of tobacco, a hint of fresh red plums and a touch of raisin. With air the raisiny notes seem to only grow in intensity. The wine is dry, somewhat tired and slightly tough on the palate with a medium body and quite tertiary flavors of loamy earth and autumnal damp leaves, some ferrous notes of blood, a little bit of pungent soy sauce, light beef jerky tones, a mushroomy hint reminding me of older Palo Cortado Sherries and a touch of saline rancio. The wine is moderately high in acidity, but the structure relies more on the assertive and noticeably grippy tannins. The finish is dry, quite long and rather tannic with pretty tertiary flavors of beef jerky, some ferrous notes of blood, a little bit of salty soy sauce, light bitter nuances of sour cherries, an autumnal hint of damp leaves and a touch of loamy earth.
This is not oxidized or completely shot, but it isn't far from that either. In our Barbi vertical this wine came across as one of the most mature wines we tasted - and we tasted vintages all the way back to the 1960's! Based on the small sample of tasting notes in CT, either there is a lot of bottle variation in Barbi BdM 2004, or then this vintage has already peaked some time ago and is now slowly gliding downill. I really don't see any upside to aging this wine any further and instead I'd recommend to empty any remaining bottles quite fast. A disappointment.
(At Barbi). Ruby with tawny edges. Beautiful bouquet of aged Brunello, showing abundant clove, red and black cherries, old leather, sweet spice. Wonderful elegance. Initially a touch thin on the palate but fills out after an hour of airtime, then perfect balance with tannins completely integrated, bright acidity and good fruit expression. Long and lingering finish. Fantastic.

Just shy of the magical 90. Not that earthy for me. Dark cherry and well-balanced. Did not seem to change that much over 2 hours. Did not decant -- not certain if this would have changed things.

Still in this score range, and you know what? -- probably always will be. Give it air. Popped and poured with no decant (increasingly very anti-decant -- we try to open stuff at a reasonably appropriate time and then let it open up naturally). Bad at first: watery and insipid, with the only redeeming quality being a decent anise component. Opens up well over several hours, to the point where, yes, this is Brunello, and (almost), 2004. Will always be on the elegant side, which is by no means a bad thing. Will there be any fruit left, though?

Barnyard leather cherry. Musty. Old school. Yet had a little bitter aftertaste and surprisingly some heat. Those two factors really brought this down in my estimation. Still worth drinking. But a great producer and a great vintage and 11 years should have made this a star.

This is showing beautifully now - old world Brunello, lovely leather tones, earthy, lovely red fruit. There is a surprising loghtness and sweetness. Surely the best Barbi I've had. It reinforces to me how important it is to wait eight to ten years to get Brunello at its best.

2004 Barbi brunello de montalchino: 1st glass decanted 1 hour. Drank without food. Highly disappointing. Tart, thin bright red fruit, slightly dusty, no backbone. Little complexity or power. 2nd glass, 90 minutes decanted, had with homemade meatballs and spaghetti. Better, needed the food to bring out and balance the wine. Fruit became less tart, subtle herb and leather notes. But still not special or noteworthy. Overall a disappointment due to expectations and $40 price tag. May just be better to jump another $30-40 to a stronger class of brunello for aging.

Decanted for an hour then enjoyed over the next 1.5 hours - Good acid and tannins but fruit is a bit faded - still very enjoyable though a bit austere - giving is a big but light taste. Did not dominate meal - actually some of the foods really overpowered the wine.

Bing cherry-red color - thin, much less concentrated than I remember for Fattoria dei Barbi Brunello. Dark cherries and saddle leather on the nose with a touch of spearmint. Red fruits on the palate with a pleasing orange rind bitter (bordering on pink grapefruit) on the finish. Very astringent on the tongue. Medium bodied, even light. I've had this wine many times, perhaps an off bottle.

Very dark color with tinge of brown. The nose was cherry, leather, some earthiness with medium oak. A strong alcohol smell which dissipated somewhat with time decanting. overall was disappointed by this wine and expected much more. The wine should have been in its prime with years left. The two friends I drank with were also disappointed.

The nose initially made me think I was about to partake in a weak blueberry tea. This needed the time to open up into its more wild, floral self. Violets, licorice, cocoa, dark froest berries. This is still quite fleshy & shows a firm tannic grip as it finishes. Tiny bit of bitterness lingers. I could see this going strong over ten years.

Dark plum in color; nose was not very pronouced...musty, leather, hint of eucalyptus and wild forest fruit; interesting palate with echos of soft milk chocolate on tip of tongue followed by dark berry, tea, mushroom and pine; nice balance with lots of tannin on the finish (undoubtedly will improve with additional aging and more time in decanter than we allowed it).

This is delicious. Rich and mellow. I just wish I could find this in my market in Atlanta. I ran across it at de Laurenti grocery in Pike Place market, Seattle. Again with our friend from Tuscany. So this is apparently an Italian wine you can share with Italian guests with confidence.

Dry, but smooth with tart finish. Very italian. Would recommend decantiing for at least 3 hours. Still with tannins, can cellar longer. Finish is like sweet tarts, even after 4 hours of decanting, more earthy nose, mineral , but sounds strange, but still very smooth.

Dark almost opaque. Took a while for the alcohol to blow off, but it settled in real nice after a couple hours in the decanter. Nose of cedar, smoke, liocorice, and black pepper. Plum and dark fruit on the palate, with a hint of cedar, and licorice. Nice dry fine tannins with good acid balance..... A very slight bitterness on the very end is my only complaint. All in all I really like this wine.

Nose: very aromatic, chocolate raspberry cream cake, hint of pine, vanilla bean, very dessert like, hint of pistachio, smoke, and dry herbs. Taste: Very dry and oaky. Almost of eat wood plank. Medium-full body with asian spice and strong tannin. Blueberry, black current, sour, chinese medicine in the back palate. Dry strong tannin in the finish. Leather and cardamon. Final thought: too woody and a bit un-refined for the price.

I really like Barbi's style of brunello. With just a 30 minute decant this was lovely, and it continued to open as the meal progressed. Nice floral nose with a touch of cigar box, mouthfeel is silky smooth. A medium body brunello, with sweet dusty tannins, and quite good acidic grip on the back end. Should drink well for the next 3-5 years.

For a brunello, it opened up pretty quickly again. Little need to decant. Aromatic notes of fruits, blackcurrant, new oak, honey, hints of flower, herbs and smoke. Too intense alcohol on palate, tannin in the background, hidden character and structure, unfortunately losing its aromatic sustainability similar to Vigna del fiori of the same year. 香氣如黑醋栗,橡木,蜂蜜,草本,和煙燻的香氣味. 酒體醇厚層,芳香口感温和,平稳單寧和酒酸. 香辣尾韻.

We had our bottle after holding onto it and cellaring for 3 years. My father had brought it back direct from Italy paying only $35, which was a steal. We popped and poured at dinner. This was a pleasure to drink and goes great with rich Northern Italian food. It has now smoothened out, is very balanced, and is loaded with flavors of red and dark fruit, smoke, meat, pepper and spice. Medium bodied. The wine can last another 4-5 years with another 2 years of it being in its prime. A very good deal for a Brunello.

connoisseur wines spring european portfolio (Vivere, Chicago IL): nose: lovely and perfumed nose with plush tones of violets, red cherries, roasted herbs and red florals. A very pretty nose that leans more to the feminine, though it is rather tight right now as would be expected
taste: A very pretty nuanced and feminine medium feel with medium/high acidity flows with perfumed tones of roasted herbs, violets, dark red cherries, and bits of mixed berries
overall: I'm a fan of fattoria barbi to begin with, and this was exactly what I wanted from them. A nice classic young brunello that should be able to age effortlessly for up to two decades. Has good stuffing and has a real attractive quality to it that will make it very fun to drink in about 8 years or so

So this is apparently an Italian wine you can share with Italian guests with confidence.

a very old world Italian-style wine, nose was subtle mid-to-dark fruits, not overbearing. a little of old world dirt also. good legs, mild tannins on the mid-palate, dry-mouth finish.

Aromas of dark cherry and a little cocoa. Medium to full body. Flavors of sour cherry and a little forest floor. Flavors are intense and pure. Long dry finish. This tastes very real and is very well made.

香辣尾韻.

Great licorice/anise nose. A mix of deep red fruit, aciidty and dry (but pretty smooth) tannin on the palate. Probably needs at least a couple more years to come together.

Loved it. Believe it or not we just popped it open on a rainy day and sipped through the evening with Brie and then dessert.

Mid-weight brunello with a slight brick color on the rim. Violets, earth and cherry on the nose. Not too tannic...nicely balanced and delicious.

Medium garnet colour. Aromatic, earth, mineral, cherry, licorice and animal nose. Medium-full bodied palate that is assertive but elegant. Long, marzipan finish.

Brickish red color. Great, classic Brunello nose of leather, violet, smoke & red berry. Fleshy, red berry fruit flavors with smoke, leather & a pretty floral element. Classic 2004 Brunello.

connoisseur wines spring european portfolio (Vivere, Chicago IL): nose: lovely and perfumed nose with plush tones of violets, red cherries, roasted herbs and red florals.
