AW93. Baby Martha, this was a PNP and brought back memories of tasting the 07 Martha in Zurich last year. This was clearly a fantastic vintage across the Heitz portfolio and in Napa. This estate bottling is more delicate, floral and with less weight than its older sister, but fantastic to sip and enjoy and will look to pick up more as exceptional QPR.

I compare the Heitz Napa to the Joseph Phelps Napa in many ways. I believe the Phelps is slightly less vintage dependent than Heitz. But, this 07 like the vintage in Napa, sensational.
This 2007 is peaking. Perfectly ripe & juicy; brambly blackberries, creamy black raspberries, black plum, dark cherries/kirsch, blueberries come on late and poached strawberries on the edges. The tannins are still dark and tarry. Rich, sweet, dark soils, mid & dark berry cola, anise, steeped black tea, dry tobacco, used leather, cedar/sandalwood, clove, nutmeg, some cinnamon & vanillin, moist, grey volcanic clay, dry crushed rocks, limestone, mid spice, hints of grilled meat, some fresh/dry herds, a tad of eucalyptus, stewy/tumble weed, fresh & withering dark, red, blue florals framed in violets, excellent round acidity, the scope of the finishes encompasses; balance for days, nice structure & tensioned, elegant, polished and lasts two minutes.

First bottle a week or so ago was tainted with TCA. This one was great, though. Tannins have softened, as well as the fruit, and have left behind an elegant, delicate wine. Hour 2 and 3 were the highlights.

This one has aged beautifully. Tannins perfectly integrated, mild cherry and other fruit notes, but this wine really shines from its minerality. Not your typical over the top napa cab; much more subtle but still very nice.

Good, but the tannins and fruits not as seamless as I would hope. I admit to trying to grasp the Heitz of decades ago, my memory is imperfect, so maybe I’m underrating. Or maybe it’s just not as good as I hoped from the vineyard and the vintage.

Nose is mostly menthol and eucalyptus, some burnt sugar and petrol.
Pure silk in the mouth with red cherry, plum, and raspberry fruit complimented nicely by earth, herb, and that faint eucalyptus. Finish is long and clean with more red cherry fruit and now mineral as well.
Very delicate and lighter weight than most Napa Cabs, this wine still stood up nicely to a rich Wagyu steak. Drink now to 2027.

Dark crimson color. Aromatics and palate of candied currants, black berries, black cherry, boysenberry, leather and sweet tobacco. Satisfying, ripe finish. While good, this is a bit one dimensional, and lacks the sophistication of a top tier Cali Cab or even a mid-tier Bordeaux.

Opened and decanted 2 hours ahead of grilled fillet, potatoes, and asparagus. Dark, purple color with a crimson hue. Sweet nose brings candied cherries, fresh lavender, musty forest floor, dried leather, and sweet tobacco. The palate is full, round, compact, and dense, bringing deep blueberries, blackberries, blackcurrant, and dark cherries with chocolate, espresso bean, bay leaf, and cherry cobbler into the finish, which is dry and savory. Overall, a good sweet note streaks through the wine from the nose to tail and is offset by a lingering savory, soy note. Old-school and not afraid to show it. Drink 2020-2028.

I grew up tasting and buying Heitz cabernet back in the 70's when I was in my twenties. It was THE wine to buy(because it was sooo delicious and sooooo expensive). So of course I drank a lot of Heitz cabernet. It was and always will be (in my mind, of course) the standard bearer of Napa Valley cabs. It was the one wine that we placed above all others. It was the epitome of all Napa Valley cabs - end of sentence. And to this day, it still stands up as one of the best vineyards in the valley. This particular bottle is holding up well despite it's age but still showing incredible depth, color and flavor.

When in doubt, a sure bet is a well aged, good vintage Heitz.
I intended to grab an 06 but, mistakenly grabbed an 07. I’ve not had one of my 06’s yet...next weekend.
The one thing I do every time I open one of my ten year or older Heitz Napa Cabernet’s is smile & think, this was sub $35 at Costco. It’s the wine feeling/definition of stealing candy from babies.
The nose is a beautiful harmony of fruit, earth and florals. Steeped, somewhat stewed, candied fruits of; dark currants/cassis, blackberries, dark cherries, black raspberries, mix of purple fruits; boysenberries, ollieberries, & mulberries. Dark, sweet tarriness, anise to black licorice, touch of incense, fire ambers, dark spices with violets palate heat, chocolate pudding, vanilla, light; cinnamon, clove & nutmeg, dark chocolate, caramel, sweet, soft, dark spice, dark berry cola, dark cherry kirsch, dark, rich earth, limestone, crushed, dry rocks, dry top soil, moist clay, understated herbs & dry brush, brewed coffee, mint, some sage & bay leaf, tobacco, dry, old leather with amazing, fresh & slightly withering & candied; dark, red, blue, purple with a violet & lavender frame. The acidity is splendid. The long, ripe, ruby, lush, elegant, well crafted balance of fruit & earth is delicious and persists endlessly with a dark spice on the long set.
The body is; delightful, ripe, rich, lush & full. The structure, tension, length and balance are woven in a perfect tapestry. This 07 has another 10-15 years easily. The tannins are rounded, smooth but, still have a dark, chewy, tarriness with baby teeth. The beauty of the vintage is on full display. Steeped, somewhat stewed, candied fruits of; dark currants/cassis, blackberries, dark cherries, black raspberries, mix of purple fruits; boysenberries, ollieberries, & mulberries. Dark, sweet tarriness, anise to black licorice, touch of incense, fire ambers, chocolate pudding, vanilla, light; cinnamon, clove & nutmeg, dark & milk chocolate, caramel, sweet, soft, dark spice, dark berry cola, dark cherry kirsch, dark, rich earth, limestone, crushed, dry rocks, dry top soil, moist clay & dry brush, brewed coffee, mint, tobacco, dry, old leather with amazing, fresh & slightly withering & candied; dark, red, blue, purple with a violet & lavender frame. The acidity is perfect. The finish is; rich, ripe, ruby, candied, well balanced fruit & earth, elegant and long sets into velvety, round tannins and mid dark spices.

As always Heitz delivers a solid Cabernet. 12 years of age on this one and it was drinking perfectly. This is not a great wine, but it is very good, especially for the price. Always reliable.

Very solid wine. I've been a fan of Heitz since the '80's and it still does not disappoint. This wine has it all - fabulous black fruit, silky textures, solid tannins and a brilliant mouth feel. Its holding together quite well for an 2007. I love this wine, only wish I could drink it more often!

Tasting note from day 2. Plenty of black licorice and dark fruits on the nose. Palate has a beautiful, silky texture, blackberry fruit, and fine tannins. Nice acidity. This is very solid but having tasted the 2013 vintage of the same wine recently, I would say the 2013 had greater depth and more distinctive flavors.

Wow, what a great showing in this category. It still has a lot of fruit intensity and hints of oak still lingering, without overpowering. Tannins are well rounded at this stage and has integrated beautifully with the acidity. It gains it points not from being a complex wine with lots of different strands, but from being a great example of well crafted Napa cab gaining from age.

Was much more closed down than a year ago. Possibly in another dumb phase. Consistent with previous notes only the finish seemed hotter and harder on this bottle. Should last well past 2030 - timing the windows will be key. Technical score: 91. Enjoyment score: 90.

Such a confident wine. The nose is filled with cherries, a touch of varnish, and earthy tones of cigar box, wood spice, and Heitz's trademark whiff of eucalyptus. The palate starts out compact but opens up after a 1-hour decant, expressing itself fully at the 3-hour mark. Structured and poised, expressive yet controlled, a little Old School, a little spicy, and seamless once it hits its stride. Lovely.

Took to Vintage. I thought it was a nice but uninspired obviously Napa cab. It has rich fruit a fair amount of oak and decent tannin structure, yet somehow just wasn't inspiring. Not a bad bottle, but not a 45 dollar bottle either.
Opinions varied from mine to, "it's a hot mess."

Definitely improved and more accessible than a year ago. Decanted 2 hours ahead of a roasted pork loin feast. Dark, deep, cloudy crimson color. The aromatic nose is lovely, bringing whiffs of lavender, cherry blossoms, spring violets, raspberries, and blackberry pie. The palate is medium, rustic, dense, and tangy, bringing blueberries, creme de cassis, plums, blackberries, raspberries, dried leather, sweet tobacco, cherry cobbler, and fresh cedar into the finish, which is much more resolved and less hot than one year ago. Tannins are more refined and there is still a great core of acidity. Drink now through 2025.

The wine was in real good shape - color and clarity, body. Good fruit flavors with a hint of oak. I decanted and let it sit for 20 minutes before drinking which helped the softness at the beginning. The finish was nice but not real long.

Decanted 3 hours; minimal sediment. Deep garnet color to the rim. Restrained nose of strawberries and cracked pepper. Medium bodied, with acids, tannins and alcohol all more prominent than the red fruit on the palate. Medium length finish with heat as the lingering impression. Overall, a decent wine, but it doesn't live up to my memories of the Heitz of old. Probably will not improve with further age. Drink up over the next couple of years.

3-1/2 hour decant. Black to very deep purple edge. Nose lightly perfumed with black fruits and some Rutherford character. Taste was rich, balanced and showing the same black fruit and Rutherford character as the nose. Finished smoothly. This did not give up much on opening. Started drinking at 3-1/2 hours, continued getting better over the next 1-1/2 hours. Long life ahead.

Opened and decanted 3+ hours ahead of a seared filet dinner feast. Dark, deep, cloudy crimson color. Nose brings bright red raspberries, fresh cut spring flowers, sweet tobacco, espresso, leather, and wet sod. The palate is jagged, full, saturated, and silky, bringing plump blackberries, blueberries, chocolate cherries, mocha, and candied strawberries. The finish is hard and hot - the only major detriment to this wine - with thick acid, alcohol, and tannins. Typical to the vintage in Napa, I'm not so sure the finish will improve much. Drink now - 2025.

The 2007 Heitz Cellar Cabernet is a deep ruby coloured wine that combines fruit and finesse perfectly and is packed with fragrant aromas of raspberries, blueberries and fresh lavender. It is full bodied, muscular and tannic, yet well rounded and soft as it unleashes loads of chocolate, creme de cassis and caramel on the palate - and caps it off nicely with a long, silky finish. It is in the early days of its maturity phase and should continue to evolve nicely over the next decade.

Nice wine if not a bit thin or one note. Bottle age helps. Good quality helps. But once you've had their Martha's Vineyard, other Heitz bottles come up short. Good wine at Costco for $35 but not at $40+.

Pretty and showing it's age well. Dried currant, stone, lazy tannin and full, this wine is drinking great right now. I think I paid 40 bucks for it a few years ago and it is holding up very well. Definately getting my QPR on this one. I think it's nearing it's apex.

Pencil shavings check, restrained but still black currants check, even some wet stones. Hopes are up while topnotch homemade hamburgers are on the way but unfortunately a bit onedimensional in mouth with a nice attack but then fading too quick just leaving a bitterness without supporting fruit and structure. Propably won't improve.

Dark fruit flavor. Plums and dark berries mixed in with tar and asphalt on the finish. While it was drinkable it tasted beyond the peak. I was disappointed and will probably not buy this again. We did decant and even let it sit for five hours. Sadly, it did not improve. It was not corked or bad... just an average wine.

On first opening, full aromas of eucalyptus and pine resin. Rich, herbal flavors with black fruit underneath. Licorice and tar in the finish. Some rough edges. With air time, everything smooths out except the finish, which retains some heat. Still young, but very plush and very ready to drink. I like this quite a bit, though if it were a little less plush I would would like it even more.

Slow Ox'ed after opening for about an hour as there was no decanter available. Big, smokey, black currant, red berry and plum aromas and flavors, with tobacco and other earth tones, which are really starting to make their prescience known. Well integrated, slightly dusty tannins. This wine is in a great place currently. Long finish. Stood up to a big juicy grilled ribeye steak.

Needs an hour out of the bottle to soften some of the greenish finish. Blue fruit nose, sweet plums and light, airy flowers. Very fragrant and even with the long barrel age, not much oak. Some finish but nothing that stood out. Had this tonight as well as last week in Mill Valley at El Paseo. Awesome with the thyme and bacon wrapped filet.

Nice color. The nose shows sweet red fruit, oak, char, and a hint of flowers. This is medium full bodied with decent concentration and good finesse. There is bright fruit on display here, in a fresh and easy going style. The tannins are a bit rustic, but the acidity is sound. Good length.

This wine skillfully finds the intersection of deliciousness and quality. The 2007 is still available on retailers shelves so here in 2013 it's arriving with 6 years of post-vintage age. And that age has softened any rough edges that may have been present on release.
Plush dark fruit on the nose, cola on the palate, and soft tannins make this very appealing. So enjoyable to drink. Low to medium acidity enables this to go well on its own or with food. Everything is in balance here. Read more...

Heitz Cab will always have a soft spot in my heart. 40 years ago when traveling Cali. I discovered the pleasures of Napa and Sonoma wines and Heitz Martha's Vineyard Cabs, Stoney Hill Chardonnays and other boutique wineries. I stop drinking Heitz about 15 years ago when other wineries surpassed Heitz but my wife was nostalgic and bought me a bunch for Christmas. The 2007 is a great wine and why I prefer California wines over French, easy to drink great compliment food and a better value. I love French wines but thank you California.

Great wine. What I would expect from heitz cellars. Fruit forward with a nice mid palate showing ripe berries followed up by soft tannins. The wine was much more approachable than I thought it would be, tannins weren't too overpowering. I definitely enjoyed this wine.

Unusually light in tone for a Napa Cabernet, the 2007 Heitz Napa Cabernet is very nice. The nose features red and purple fruits, olive, herb, and earth notes. The tannins are tame and balanced, and support the mid-palate notes of cherry, herb, plum, and earth. The finish lasts quite a long time, and reveals hints of cranberry and cherry. In addition, this represents a fantastic value!

Just what Heitz should be. An excellent, rich California cab that you can pick up at a decent price. Great deep ruby color, earthy nose of wet granite. Plumb and other ripe dark fruit. A little closed down even after a 2 hour decanting. Probably still a bit young, but defintely able to be drunk.

This deep ruby wine flaunts an immediately-expressive nose of pickling spice, ripe plum, coffee cake and carmelized oak. It is medium-bodied on the palate, with low-to-medium acidity, refined tannins and well-integrated alcohol (listed as 14.5%). The flavors reflect the nose, but the plum component turns just a bit pruney in the middle and this hint of over-ripeness persists throughout the medium-length back end. Ready to drink now, this is a wine which pushes the edge of ripeness but is enjoyable nonetheless. Drink now-12/17.

Ahhh, been waiting for this release for 2 years. This is the longest I remember waiting for the Heitz basic Napa release to come out. Compared to the 06, there is no comparison. I encourage you to do a verticle of the 06 vs the 07 while the 06 is still out there. Different than the 06, the 07 is riper with strawberry daiquiri and cola on the nose with the finish just oozing with sappy red fruit and vanilla. Really nice for the $36 price point.

Lovely.

Ordered a bottle at restaurant...decanted but I don't think it really needed this. Not a big cab but totally enjoyed. Tannins tame...but added some oomph.

Not too fruit-forward, nice mouth feel. Good $ value for a well known, '07 napa cab.

Claret-style, restrained, balanced wine. Don't buy if you want a big or otherwise compelling cab. But very enjoyable as a quiet wine w a lot of finesse.

Restaurant purchase. Pop & pour with no need for a decant. Dark fruit and plum. Not overly complex but good mouthfeel with smooth tannins and a medium-plus finish. Very full on the palate.

Delicious pepper and blackberry. Paired very well with filet mignon. Just the right balance of acidity, tannins, and fruit. Will cellar my other bottle for 4-5 years. Great value!

Had a small pour. Still young, cassis and cherries, very dry and structured. Could be quite good in several years. 89-90

- Brick color with fast forming legs and aromas of cherry and licorice anise. It's somewhat balanced and has flavours of cloves, cherry and black pepper with a light/medium body. Silky texture with a medium finish.

Really lovely wine that is fairly closed at present. Opened up some after 2 hour decant. Very "old school" and amazing value as well. Will wait 4-5 years on the next one.

Decanted. Smells hot. Tight. Spicy/lots of oak. Lots of acidity and a tannic mouth coating finish. Sweet fruit starts emerging after about an hour in the decanter. Clearly needs more time but not sure if it's ever going to develop properly.
