Somewhat sappy sensation, gave the impression of missing acid. Slightly candied fruit, more candied and less cherry than say the Le Pin, but more fruity than the Cheval Blanc or the Montrose. Enjoyable. Easier drinking, more accessible, less "intellectual" than many of the other 1989 Bordeaux.

drunk alongside the 1994 Ducru Beacaillou (admittedly a strange combination...), and very surprisingly much the poorer of the two - this was hollow and largely lifeless although it does not appear or smell past its prime - I have only a couple of bottles left and the 1989's have generally been excellent so will leave these in the hope the wine is just in a "dumb" phase

Alex and William's Birthday Dinner (Tonny Restaurant, Geylang Lor 3, Singapore): A solidly good, if not quite spectacular Pomerol, drinking nicely now. The nose was especially attractive, with lovely drafts of dark berries and plums, and then a bit of earth and meat, these wreathed with fragrant rolls of tobacco smoke and Christmas spice. Very pretty indeed. The palate was very elegant too, with a robe of powdery, velvety tannins and soft acidity draped over rich plum and earth and chocolate notes, and then a more defined spine of mineral and spice, with a puff of tobacco smoke drifting away into the distance. Very nice, if just lacking some of the oomph from a top, top vintage of Trotanoy.

cellared on release by Mike B.(ig). As he relates, picked up at a restaurant tasting in the early 90's that he had to pay an astonishing $350 to attend (for which he got to taste ten different vintages of Petrus!). At the end this was the only bottle he could afford.
nose - subtle blackberry mouth - agreeable cocoa-infused red fruits. very long. good not great

1989 Bordeaux Dinner (Joseph's Place, Wong Chung Hang, Hong Kong): Slightly dusky ruby, bricking at the edge but translucent ruby core. Nose is reticent under the cooking smells from the open kitchen...spices and red berry fruit. Palate is deep and alluring, still young, belly filling richness of red fruit, powerful. Heady. Good length. Needs more time to develop despite the 3 hour decant.

Great, deep and dark fruity Pomerol from the plateau. Still a baby that requires air to open up but what a fleshy character once woken up in the decanter. Less glycerin and velvety texture in that vintage compared to his famous neighbor Petrus but still huge potential and not far behind it, if at all. Great stuff!!

Served too cold (my fault) and it suffered going next to more exotic 89 Conseillante, but boy was this good as it got some air and warmed up. Quite masculine and firm, showing more like a Left Banker, with iron, truffles, earth and black licorice. Terrific and just hitting its stride.

Lovely, mature, classic claret. A little subdued on the nose, showing cherries, loam, cedar. The palate is all silky and seamless with excellent grip and brightness, quite long. Just a touch of hard tannin on the tail end that adds gravitas, reminding that this comes from an earlier era when structure wasn't a sin. With a bit of air, this gets sweeter tasting of dried cherries. Overall, just lovely, effortless and satisfying.

This is a very pretty wine. It's more complicated on its floral, they, truffle, tobacco, and plum nose, than on the medium bodied, elegantly styled palate. The wine just lacks the weight and density found in the best vintages.

Signs of evolution in terms of colour, only the centre was quite dark still. Quite sweet on the nose, notes of dried fruit, spices, tobacco, but also an unpleasant woody touch, almost like a cork taint. This was also apparent on the palate (and got worse over time) masking what seemed to be a well balanced, concentrated and delicious wine. A second tasting sample from another bottle revealed an even stronger cork taint. Well, that's bad luck I guess. NR

The 89 Trotanoy does't get a lot of praise, but I very much like the style here; the freedom and ripeness of Pomerol within a more elegant frame than you might expect for the year. Damson, clay, hints of chocolate, truffle, and mineral with air. Though not exactly elegant, this remains very far from corpulence and over-extraction. Dimension and interest. The 13.5% on the label tasted like 12.5% in the glass, which is just right. I should add that popping and pouring this would be an error; this was angular and simple out of the bottle and blossomed with 2 hours in the decanter. This will last, but I wouldn't anticipate further positive development here.

Second bottle from same case. Again, cork barely saturated and looked like a 2 year old cork! Wonderful ruby colour, immediately open with a very classic milk chocolate nose, interlaced with hazelnut, nutmeg and all spice, wrapped up in cherry/plum fruit. Mid weight but in a good way, no rough edges just incredible drinking. Cashmere smoothness and great length. Drunk with Mrs Wine Lister and her banker friend with great Cantonese food. Superb!!

Decanted for 90 mins. Some bricking on the edge, excellent for a 25 year old. Nuances of cocoa, coffee, truffles and plummy fruit dominate the nose. Savoury, spicy fruit provide good delineation to and otherwise elegant medium conclusion.

Opened on SS's birthday at Pizza Express. How Sideways of me. Great bottle into the neck. Cork looked almost brand new (no saturation). Deep, dark ruby. Hardly evolved at all. Nose was quite reluctant but a very obvious nose of hazelnuts, touch of chocolate and coffee. Not much obvious fruit on the nose but it was very interesting and stimulated a lot of discussion at the table. Palate was lush and smooth, tasted similar to its nose with more noticeable fruit. Perfect drinking claret and went great with the pepperoni pizza!

Bordeaux 1989 Horizontal Tasting (Zurich): Ripe red with some brick at the edges. Nose of Wermouth, some herbal touches, earth and alcohol. The wine is very dry, with hints of malt and bitterness. All a bit short and one dimensional. I expected more. At its peak and to be drunk now.

Red, red nose - red currants, hint of tobacco leaf, pale hint of raspberry - red brick, as if filtered through red brick. On the palate, some leafy (forest floor) tannins, mostly integrated. Subtle, smooth, supple - delicious, and very nice. Like a Dunn version of a Pomerol, extremely good but in this case not extraordinary.

Opened and drank over 3 hours. A lovely wine. Plenty of violet on the nose with some funk that blew off over time. A little tannic and the fruit began to fade after a couple hours, but enjoyable nonetheless. No need to wait on this, but no real rush either. It's in a nice place.

The color is fine. Not particularly aged but nice color. Nose is disappointing. Reveals a high level of alcohol. A bit of fruits but not much. In the mouth, not impressed. Again, strong alcohol and feels heavy... Ok, it got better over time but still not great, especially next to Dominus 2001 and La Landonne 2001!

Initial over-powering nose of spices, bell peppers, tobacco. Very ordinary on the palate, but gaining in density and complexity 3-4 hours after opening. Dark fruits, fine tannins, balanced, neither a blockbuster nor a ballerina. Disappointing.

TTG#7: Hamina Comes to Town (and we all drink good wine) (Keyaki Grill at Capital Tokyu; La Fève Wine Bar (Tokyo)): Kudos to the owner of the wine bar, La Fève. I thought the first bottle was ever so slightly corked. One person agreed with me and several disagreed. Without prompting, the owner came from across the room (where she couldn’t have overheard our conversation) and commented that she thought it was a bit bouchonée and insisted that she replace the bottle. Second bottle was not flawed, but wasn’t great either. But that’s not her fault. In the manly vein of Pomerol, the nose showed plum and cassis fruit but without the sumptuousness for which I would hope. There was a bit of sun-dusty clay and some vanilla sweetness as well. Palate moderately full and showed more of the same fruit, but without the velvet that marks the best Pomerol. Decent but not exciting finish. Good wine, but a bit ho-hum for the price and the expectations.

Tasting Dinner at Sweets and Savouries (Chicago, IL): Many thought this was corked and they were probably right. The nose was mostly muted, but hinted at graphite, anise and dusty fruits. Palate tried to offer cassis fruit, but was flat. I brought this one. Bummer...2 corked bottles in one flight!

Leve does 1989 Bordeaux at Mélisse (Los Angeles, CA): A very nice showing and more than held its own in a tough flight. Perhaps a little rustic. Great structure, more overt relative to the fruit. Soy sauce on the noise. A bit of alcohol poking out. However, I love the power and muscle on this wine.
