Getting to be past its prime. Drink this now. Not as enjoyable as another bottle I had last year. Yet has the supplenless and softness of a classic sangiovese. Tobacco, leather, and dark berries. Lovely soft feel. A Brunello is always enjoyable.

I generally shy away from corporate wine powerhouses, specially those that have a castle on their winery, as they tend to focus more on marketing and profit than the wine. Banfi fits both the criteria. Yet, I was pleasantly surprised by this wine. It is ready for drinking. Drank after opening the bottle for 2 hrs. Should have decanted it. Quite an elegant wine. Trademark orange tinge in the crimson color wine. Bouquet of spice, leather, tobacco, balsamic vinegar. Medium bodied in the mouth with a medium-long finish. It may not be the best example of a brunello, best certainly a good example of one. Really enjoyed this wine with parents and wife celebrating her birthday. As is quintessentially true about wine, despite its esoteric qualities that may sometimes be hard to enunciate, its best quality is how enjoyable it is in company and its ability make long lasting memories. I shall open the other bottle in the cellar in a few years time.

Decanted for 1/2 hour, and showed no further development in the glass over 1 hour. Either closed, or on the downside of the hill. My TN agrees with BobVictor's -- earth note on the nose; a light sour taste rather than fruit on the palate. I'd add a hollow mid-palate and a short finish to arrive at the lower score.

(a winter's eve slow roast with Mich&Bo and Newan) Leathery, dark and dusty berries, floral cherries and some ethanol hotness prominent on the nose. Gangly and a little awkward, and certainly difficult to see past the sharp tannins (still too young), with some mandarin peel if you look for it, along with chocolate, leading to a rather long minty finish. Interesting wine, but I don't really understand it right now - would love to try in 5 year's time.

A very correctly styled Brunello, the 2005 Castello Banfi exhibits a vivid array of red fruits like red currant, cherries which are barely mature and strawberries with high acidity. There is a also a subtle elegant tone of bitter almonds. The wine is slightly unintegrated, all the different components speak their own language and especially the oak is a bit too loud at this point in time. Overall impression is a well-made wine which hopefully will develop with some more time in the bottle. (score is 88-89)

Very cool and correct Brunello. Nice sparky sour cherry fruit with a herbal tingle and a flash oak still to fully integrate. Unlikely to be a long ager but a well-priced forward Brunello for drinking over the next 5 or 6 years.

Brunello di Montalcino tasting (Riga, Latvia): 🏅Rating 88/100 (3,8⭐)
Stewed fruits. Good acidity. Vanilla Oak spices & chocolate over fruit. Too commercial wine for me. Fast food
