Holding up very well for a 29 year old white wine! Better than just very well. This wine was lychee nuts here, there and everywhere, with spice at the back of the palate. Very smooth and no bite. The tropical fruit had calmed down from what it must have been like when new. There was a tiny bit of pineapple and undifferentiated citrus, but mainly it was the lychees. The age creates a trade off. Young Gewurz can be rough on the mouth, but more of a fruit salad to go with the lychees. This had less other fruit but very smooth and easy to drink. The color showed no evidence of age - perhaps a tiny bit more golden than when young, but it could have been the lights in the restaurant. The only problem was my bad pairing choice. It went well with a spicy fried shrimp appetizer but my teriyaki skirt steak, although good by itself, was not a great match. Unfortunately, they had a bunch of good clam dishes, but the chef did not like the looks of the clams, so he did not buy them. I should have gone with the mussels.

13.5% abv. Golden straw color, thick staining of tears. Exceptional 28 year old gewurtz...smooth, waxy mouthfeel, pure lychee and tropical fruit. Very mature. Still showy. This is at or near peak - suggest you drink up if you have ‘em - but at the same time, this is a joyride for lovers of Alsace, and Gewurtz in particular. Improved with 30 min of air, no decant.

At Varka. Excellent, expansive tropical fruit aroma, great tropical fruit notes as well on the palate, long finish with an almond note on the finish. Though I expect it, can't say I'm a fan of the rough finish but the nose and attack are totally worth it.

Rose water, potpourri, some antique scents like grandma's house, but also some unexpected ginger and pineapple richness too. Nearly oily weight, with a sweetness underlying everything while still finishing with a refreshing bitters bite that primes for another sip. Seems like this is totally mature but might just cruise along for another decade without changing much either.

Deliciious bottle that pleased everyone at the table. Crisp citris on the nose with a little almond; a lot of weight in the palate and very balanced. Nice long finish. Did I say delicious? It was.

What a surprise! The wine was in great condition and appeared to have many years ahead of it. Classic lychee and grapefruit aromas. Intense, ripe but not sweet fruit in the mouth with great balance, structure and length.

At Wigwam in Chicago. Gorgeous nose of tropical fruit, honey suckle and lychee. Nice dry caramel and almonds on the finish. Spectacular.

Great Cult Tasting: Big spicy, ginger. lychee nut nose. Thick on the palate. Nice finish. Excellent, muscular wine.
