My thoughts on this run fairly orthogonal to a lot of other reviewers. Rich, sweet berries, integrated oak with some vanilla still out front, bit of eucalyptus, full body and surprisingly little heat. This has integrated really well for me over nearly a decade. (Even better on second night.)

I agree with other reviews of this. Some oak, and a bit of alcohol. Flat with a fairly sour taste. Bright dark color still and some sediment development indicating it could hold up for a while yet. However this one peaked.

Nose is inviting, oak, stewed fruit a bit of alcohol. Palate a little flat with a fairly sour taste of cooked plum and raspberries. Bright colour still and some sediment development indicating it could hold up for a while yet. However this is my last one of a wine I reckon peaked in 2015. Its been good fun though.

Clear deep ruby with dense legs. Clean medium+ intensity nose, very ripe dark cherries, black currants, vanilla, coconut, eucalyptus and hints of violets. Dry, medium acidity, high juicy tannins, full body, medium+ integrated alcohol, medium+ intensity flavours, ripe dark cherries and black currants, eucalyptus and toasted notes, balanced, velvety. Medium+ finish. It may lack elegance and complexity, but it's a very well made wine of very good quality. Drink now, there's no need for further ageing.

I grabbed a bottle of 2009 Denier-Handal Zinfandel in addition to this 2008 Penfolds Koonunga Hill anticipating it wasn't going to be very good and I wanted to have a back-up plan but I was pleasantly surprised. It was quite drinkable. I decanted it for 30 minutes and was expecting it to be very hot but it wasn't. Instead, I had red berries on the nose and palate with a subtle oak and vanilla.

{screwcap, 13.5%} Archetypal new world commercial red. Meaty, red-fruit, hint-of-oak nose. Big rich palate, ripe red raspberry fruits, lick of shiraz spice, a seasoning of oak. Plenty of depth of flavour, but predictably relying less on acid and tannin than fruit. OK modern red, not for cellaring past five years (in contrast to the KHs of the 80s and 90s)which provides plenty of straightforward flavour in an undemanding way. Doubtless the same note could be written for 09, 10, 11, etc...

My everyday wine. Consistent year to year. The 2008 is probably less fruity than previous vintages. Mildly phenolic on the nose that masks any fruitiness. On tasting, tannins and fruitiness are present. Great sipper at an attractive price.

Another go-to Australian and surprise, surprise - it's another blend. Nice, plummy but restrained fruits. Elegant with firm tannins. This is great QPR and the way Aus wines should go. The 2008 is much better than the 2009 though, so grab it while you see it. 2009 just didn't have the right balance of fruit and wood for me.

goodish wine but a slight step down from the seventy six bottling of the same vintage. both the nose and the palate give away a touch too much alcohol (13.5% looks a lo-ball estimate to me) with dark fruit like blackcurrant, raspberry and plum. the fruit is quite intense though with nice persistence. the colour is impenetrable purple.

Some cigar box, oak and jammy dark fruits on the nose. The palate had a touch too much alchohol with a slightly hot finish. The predominant taste was of ever so slightly bitter plums. I'm a fan of Penfolds generally, but this was a midweek stand in at best for me.

Popped and poured at 18C. Big and broad, deep aroma of black fruit, vanilla and some oak. Reasonably smooth attack and a rather generic international style mid-palate. This has stuffing, but not alot of polish. It's not what I would call an overextracted fruit bomb but it gave honest simple pleasure with a mid-week pesto meal.

Very nice for the price. Vanilla and red fruit on the nose. Pretty simple taste of raspberry and grape pixie stick. Just a touch of tobacco on the backend. Full body with nice balance of acids. Tannins are light so the wine does lack structure.

Moderate sweetness on the front tempered by the Cabernet on the back. You can taste a bit of chocolate and lots of dark berry. Smooth and goes easy on the oak. I blind tasted it with a 2009 Rosemount Shiraz Cabernet and slighly preferred the Rosemount, which happens to have more Cab in the mix. But this was very good and I can see why so many like it.

{screwcap, 14%} Pretty standard lower-end modern Penfolds red, which is to say reliable raspberry/vanilla fruits, a passing nod to added acid and soft yet gritty tannin - not enough of either to scare off the neophyte - and a gentle, not-sweet finish of a length about comensurate with its $10 price-tag. Acceptable, casual, rarther anonymous quaffer in a pretty international style. Its biggest failure is invisible; it no longer gives any hint of the glories available at the upper end of the Penfolds portfolio; something that Koonunga Hill actually used to do up until about the 1996 vintage.

a good red for the price, with a predominance of Shiraz and some Cabernet to give it a bit of structure. The Shiraz component was very jammy: lots of blackberry and some spice with touches of mocha. I would have liked more Cab, actually, since the licorice notes, when you coaxed them out, were quite nice and gave the wine some life. Good with BBQ, chili.

dark with long legs, not exactly clear - not bad anyway. nose: dark fruits with sugar (plums), well its ok - for everyone. taste: light bodied, no accidity, milk chocolate, sweet black curant, a little bit spicy. Drunk to pork ribs in BBQ sauce - good choice. As for the wine itself - mainstream bottle.

Nothing special here, but not a lot to complain about. Very dark purple color. Rustic nose, maybe just a tiny amount of that diesel smell, along with some vanilla from the oak treatment. Well extracted red licorice fruit, with some dark cherry. Adequate, probably manipulated acid. Considerable amount of somewhat bitter tannins that are not all that smooth. Medium heavy bodied with some oak influence. The vanilla on the nose shows back up on the finish. This costs 9 bucks, and I'm going to pour another glass.

Was hoping for a different experience with this one. Heavy-handed and unbalanced for my taste, throwing ripe dark fruit and oak to the front of the palate. Surprisingly muscular, though, with real structure and a tannic wallop. If big Aussie wines are your style there is good value here.

Purple colour. Sweet nose, blackberries, some chocolate, very New World/Australia style. On the palate clearly sweetish, generous, very fruity with dark berries (blackberries), clearly alcoholic, relatively tannic but of a friendly kind, some oak bitterness comes through, slightly alcohol-dominated aftertaste. Very easy to like – straight-forward and “a lot of wine for the money”. Shiraz aromas are much more obvious than anything from the Cabernet, in my opinion. It comes across as very Australian, in an almost caricature New World way. (I would very much have liked to see 1% less alcohol and less sweetness, if the fruit, concentration and tannin structure had stayed the same.) 84-85 p.

As expected, not the style I really get along with. Nevertheless it's a faultless wine. Powerful and fruit forward with lines of complexity. It's even quite stylish in its aspect, with a nearly impenetrable purple/violet brilliance. Chocolate, dark fruit and vegetable notes bind together in some sort of aromatic smoothness freshened up by a gentle but pungent spice undercurrent. Quite some depth as well. On the palate it is so full and bodied that you almost get a chewing sensation. Again, everything in its place but just overly for my taste. I'd still say quite good value for money.

P&P. Color red with black hues, medium body. Simple, moderate nose of blackberries, confection, spice, and oak. Aromas transfer to taste in a forward style. Jammy nose. Palate of fruit cake, jam, sugar cane, and a touch of cinnamon. Quite light. One third of the bottle made a delicious sauce for rack of lamb, after combining with an equal quantity of beef stock, plus some sauteed onion and a little rosemary, then reduced to almost a syrup, .

dark with long legs, not exactly clear - not bad anyway. nose: dark fruits with sugar (plums), well its ok - for everyone. taste: light bodied, no accidity, milk chocolate, sweet black curant, a little bit spicy.

This costs 9 bucks, and I'm going to pour another glass.

dark purple color. on the nose i get lots of great black cherry and plum and some brie cheese stink with a hint of oak on the back end. on the palate there is lots of dark fruit, black cherry and plum and a definite candy, crushed smarty, kool aid. there is a noticeable oaky spice on the back end with a little alcohol....but....that fruit just doesnt quit, and im liking it, a lot!!!!

quite good intensity of aroma with the black fruit and hint of pepper, on the palate there have the flavor come from oak and touch of cigar box in addition to the blackfruit, with not too intense of acidity, yet it remains longer than expected, overall not too impressive

Rather boring, unexciting wine. Nothing wrong with it, but it's just not worth it

Was hoping for a different experience with this one. Heavy-handed and unbalanced for my taste, throwing ripe dark fruit and oak to the front of the palate. Surprisingly muscular, though, with real structure and a tannic wallop. If big Aussie wines are your style there is good value here.

Good pizza wine. Nothing special but hard to say anything negative about it either. Reasonably balanced with enough tannins to stand up to the pizza sauce. Solid for the price point.

You can do a lot worse for 8 bucks. Black currents, cherries, even a touch of orange. Perhaps a little sour on the finish and a little simple, but still a decent wine for everyday consumption.

Heel prettig.

P&P. Color red with black hues, medium body. Simple, moderate nose of blackberries, confection, spice, and oak. Aromas transfer to taste in a forward style. Medium acid, mild astringent tannins, short blackberry seed finish. Overall a good wine, nothing more. Performs at or below its price point of 13.
