Monthly tasting club LTC 2016-02; French or not French? (@ My place): Beautiful and mature bouquet with dark forest fruits, graphite, vanilla, coffee and some pleasant rustic barnyard impressions. On the palate mainly dark, but also some red berries, chocolate, sweet spices, some licorice, beautiful acidity and soft tannin with still a pleasant bite. The wine is fully mature now, but no hurry; it will stay on this level for another year or two.

Weekly tasting group #180; A fully blind test. (@ My place): See my previous note. Still exactly the same. I can add some earthiness and still sticky tannin. And without a doubt I scored the wine 89 for today. Have a few more but there is no hurry. Probably an update in 2016 or 2017.

Weekly tasting group #159; Wines older than 2000 (@ RW): Beautiful bouquet with mature cassis and other dark fruits, some mint, sweet spices, tobacco, caramel and forest floor. Same on the palate. Some red fruits, bell pepper, chocolate and cinnamon as well. Pleasant acidity and slightly drying tannin. Overall; although showing some age, the wine still has a youthful color and will probably soften a bit more with some more ageing. It will never be really great, but it offers nice drinking now and might give even a little more pleasure a few years from now. I have a few more, so there will be a follow up. 88 - 89 for today.

I bought this at the Chateau from the owner in 2000. This is the first time I have tasted it. Very good and drinkable now but still some soft tannins so may go for another few years - say up to 2018. But I plan to drink it all before then. Otherwise typical of its type of Bordeaux wines, well made and well-balanced, lots of dark berry and cedarwood flavours. Essential to decant for a couple of hours before drinking as definitely improves and softens the tannins. The wine looks Garnet colored. The legs are Slow. It smells like Black currant (cassis), Mineral, and Cedar. It tastes like Red Currant, Black currant (cassis), Mineral, Oak, Lead Pencil, and Black Pepper. The body is Medium/Full. The wine has Polished texture. The wine finishes Medium.

Weekly tasting group #051; Bordeaux blends (By me @ BD): Beautiful bouquet with cassis, dark berry fruits, smoke, cedar, graphite and perfume. On the palate soft ripe fruit juice, but also some green impressions. Minerals, ok acidity, and slightly drying tannin. Beautiful wine. The bouquet is the best part at the moment. 88+

Getting there finally at age 10. Nice wine, not necessarily recognizable as Margaux, rather Haut-Medoc (i.e. a bit short on finesse on the nose). Still lots of colour, the tannins have receded and the nose has developed rather nicely. Entering peak drinking time.

Tannin leaps from the glass to the nose along with classic cassis and berry. Medium - full body with vegetal character and massive dusty tannin structure, which ordinarily I like but you might need a chair and a whip to tame this beast. Will this mellow with another 9 years in the bottle? My guess is no but there is structure here if you like this style. An acrid midpalate seemed to die down with aeration. Paid $30.

Colour still deep. Classical Bordeaux nose, some cherry but also a greeen pepper note. Fairly polished palate, medium intense, same green notes (but not too disturbing). Full aftertaste, some tannins left to resolve.

Blackberry, vanilla, cocoa, toast and meat on the nose. Full with good concentration of fruit; firm tannins and acidity; good length. Better in 5+ years.

A touch of funky, old-world Bordeaux in this bottle. A little past its peak, but still pleasant. Drink up.
