PnP. Just lovely, in the zone now in a vigorous, structured, semi-primary manner, but it's not holding anything back. Dried cocoa, dried red cherries, sexy floral and spice scents, splendid. With air, menthol and tar join the fun. The finish tells you this has plenty of time to go and might even clamp down with some air, but there are real fireworks now. 94 pts.

Double decanted in the AM for sediment. Drunk over several hours that evening
More savory and umami driven than the 03 Paje. Darker nebbiolo fruit, tar, some cured meats, nettle, and black licorice. Mid weighted and really well balanced, especially considering the vintage. A harmonious wine with no sense of heat. An outstanding wine and many evermore impressive 03. Drinking at peak for me.

Earth, leather and tobacco on the nose. Opens up soon to reveal harmony on the palate, with fine-grained tannins, classic-style fruit and good firm acidity. Not the least heavy or alcoholic, and no heat-stressed tannins either. A great '03 that will cruise for several years more.

immediately upon opening classic rose and tar are evident. Tart cherry, fresh uncut tomato, and a hint of licorice round out the aromas. The classic elements are also evident on the palate as well as the licorice and some dark fruits hiding in the background. The saline and acid components are quite noteworthy and cause the wine to linger on the palate for quite a while. The tannins remain clearly evident but are not obtrusive; food is not necessary to enjoy this wine now. Very nice.
edit: five hours after opening (no decant) the wine has lost most of its aromatics and complexity on the palate. A far less interesting wine at this point.
Dark, structured, and still brooding, with tar, iodine, iron, and a little menthol. This is more about potential now, overall coming across broad shouldered and deep with more soil and savory than fruit. There are no signs of overripeness, and blind I would never guess this was an 03. Very long and dense without any flab. Tightly coiled at this point still, with fine gripping tannins. It's youthfully powerful and less approachable than the Vigna Rionda tried along side it. That said, there is a freshness and balanced acidity with a sternness that I suspect will develop into something special. Everything seems in balance, it's just not yet developed. More impressive than enjoyable now, but that will switch in time. 91+

Classic Barolo nose and palate. Still quite young but drinking fairly well, very rustic with soft red fruits, tomatoes and herbs. Decanted while consuming and it got much better after a few hours.

God, this is just a dam good bottle.. 2003? I would never guess. An amazing wine from a cruddy vintage. Ethereal, complex, meditative and a relic from 2003. The alcohol comes out on the nose a touch but I don't have an issue with it. Roagna, Massolino and best of all, Cigliuti are the only three producers who made an exceptional wine in 2003 from Piedmont.

Darkish fruit with cherry, some slightly burnt herbal notes, roses, violets, tar and licorice. Very classic. On the palate more of the cherry, now perhaps a bit lighter, also rowanberries. Pretty tough tannins, good acidity and a salty minerality. Medium + finish. Good trad-barolo, could still use some time in the cellar.

Like all wines from Roagna, this Barolo needs about a generation or so to come around. The nose was amazing tonight with abundant expressive sour cherries, white flowers and a perfect classy Nebbiolo perfume. The palate though played some tricks with us and came across as rather austere and unintegrated. Fruit and acidity were not speaking the same languages. The experience reminded me of a Dane and Swede discussing. Some words are lost and misunderstood, but the overall message is crystal clear: This wine will sing if given some further bottle age. Roagna is a brilliant producer and there is no doubt this wine will develop nicely if just given the chance.

Didn't write a note when drinking, so from memory after a month or so. Very typical Barolo, elegant rather than large. Excellent fruits and acids, dry - good Barolo, but this bottle was not the most impressive Roagna I've had. In doubt as to whether it will pay to store it very long?

Suprisingly nice. Crushed rocks, rose, crushed mint and pine all on the nose and palate. This wine was intensly floral, big mouth feel, dry and tanninc. Amazing depth and complexity. Very long finish. Tasted next to the 03 Paje from Roagna. Huge difference. Great producer.

P&P, light cherry and fruit tea notes on the first pour transition to black cherries, floral scents, and tobacco with that classic Italian rustic edge on successive pours. Still pretty tannic on the palate, could easily stay down for a few more years but I think its drinking great now. Black cherries and earthy, loamy forest followed by leathery, almost woody tannins. Great complexity- sour cherries, flowers, minerals, bronze, orange peel, black tea and pepper; not much of the typical tar notes found in Nebbiolo but still plenty of earth in balance with the fruit. Fantastic length! The black cherry and leather remains after each sip for a minute or longer. Nice acidity really helps with the tannins; on the heavier side but adds great underlying structure and amazing depth. My gut says this will only get better as the tannins start to fade but I don't know how much longer I can wait before popping my next bottle. Style & Quality Rating: A+. Value: A+. $49 bones on WTSO and free shipping on 2 for this quality = STEAL! Overall Rating: A+.

Nose - hibiscus or other sour note Mouth - a restrained yet sophisticated drink, sour plum on the attack with transition to tea on the midpalate, long dry tray finish. This will be a very versatile wine for food parings

The 2003 Roagna La Rocca e la Pira is very very young. Expressing mature cherries, red fruits, tar and a youthful perfume of Nebbiolo, the wine has very edgy and not at all subtle tannins. The finish lasts some 40 seconds. The wine is far too young and we were a bit surprised not to find the typical amaretto tones, perhaps these will appear with some age. Though nice today, I would recommend keeping your 2003 La Rocca e la Pira in the cellar for a few more years (2 minimum). Recommended.

Well, they said Barolo´s, you either like, or you don´t, I reckon i dont, its hard tell what I felt. The smell was of plums, the taste, more alchohol-ish, I cant really say how it tasted, i just didnt like it, it was really something else atleast.
Svårt att göra detta vin rättvisa. Öppnat sisådär 10 år för tidigt. Minst. Här finns potential med mörkröd frukt, fernissa och örter vädras som ut mot aningen ljusrödare frukter. Även cassis, tobak och tjärpastiller. Bäst andra dagen. Fan, ett par år och betyget skulle bra mycket högre. God damn you Luca for making me crazy about your traditional wines.
