  • 6th of 12, splash decanted, perfect cork and level, even nicer than May bottle, starting to round out and show greater complexity, very long, pure and quite lacey, upside, 12+ years. F (17.5).......upgrade likely if this trajectory continues!

  • 5th of 12, pnp, perfect cork and level, in line with last bottle in Dec 21, more attractive on nose than palate, fine detail and freshness, just a bit thin for my taste, but sense of more to come, upgrade if it rounds out, 12 years. F (17.5).

  • My last bottle. Clearly this has benefited from its cellaring. Mature and ripe. Complex notes of partially developed cherries, apples, orange peel, liquorize and leather. Nice intensity and length.

  • 4th of 12, pnp, perfect cork and level, now starting to show well, black cherry, intense minerality, sous bois, impressive purity, decent persistence, quite lacey, upside yet. F (17.5).

  • 3rd of 12, decanted 2 hours, perfect cork and level, tad more expressive on palate but still quite hard work with unresolved fine grained tannins evident, upside possible. Currently VG+ (16.5).

  • 2nd of 12, pnp, perfect cork and level, essentially as previous bottle, hopefully with upside. VG+ (16.5)......more this time to decanted half bottle drunk on following night, beginning to show on nose if not as yet on palate.

  • 1st of 12, decanted an hour, perfect cork and level - dark, not dense, garnet, little development; damson, black cherry, hint of cranberry, quite mineral, citric, nice and reasonably complex; medium, long, not particularly persistent, slightly dilute, bit sharp and angular, rather closed, should round out with more time (I hope). Currently VG+ (16.5).

  • This wine has really shown me that some wines need time in the cellar. The last two bottles tasted in 2012 and 2014 did not yield in the glass and gave me only worries. But tonight this wine shone like a star. It started out a bit strange, giving me leather, some unbalanced acidity and tertiary notes on both nose and palate. But after an hour the wine shows more and more dark fruited intensity with forest floor, moss, honey, cloudberries, blueberries and a nice balance with integrated, fine grained tannins still present in the wine.

I will wait 2-5 years with my final bottle, as I see no rush. The wine has developed into something very good.

  • Red fruits, stony minerality, acid, and lift on the palate with a hint of green herbs. I think drink now while there is enough flesh...lovely!

  • Pure, red fruited with bitter herbs and earth on the finish. Excellent acidity and very refreshing. Nor sure if this has the stuffing to age and will drink my other from this vintage sooner rather than later.

  • Warm red clear color, softly bricking in the edges. Starting to lose the young ruby red and turning ever so slightly into a mature color with a clear blank edge. Dark, powerful nose with lots of marzipan, fruit candy, leather, and hints of raspberries, smoke and sour cherry. Stony minerality. Slight alcohol sting, but not bothering in any way. Palate is nice with sour cherries, raspberries, warm fruity notes, lemon and tannins, but a bit thin. Was hoping for some more power and intensity. A bit green bitterness in the finish. Not a fantastic wine. Will never be. Waaay to acidic and not too much interesting character. 50+5+11+11+6 (83p).

Next day the nose is much the same, but a bit more classical pinot nose than yesterday, and a tad more balanced. Palate is still very acid-driven but perhaps a bit more composed today. Slightly better. As the second evening passes, the acidity diminishes and this turns into drinkable pinot. Not bad, and actually something to wait for. Hold 5-8 years!

  • Pretty translucent ruby. Telltale Vougeot aromas of iron, rust, charcoal, and damp earth. Earthy entry with sweet dense red fruits, mushrooms, and a bit of stinky cheese. Long finish. Even though this is from the not so charming '08 vintage, it is ready to go and very interesting.

  • Sucker needs air! Tannic, tight and tart....yet pure bright crunchy sweet red fruits. Silky candied strawberry, raspberry, cherry...pretty florals, strawberry perfume, crushed minerals, dusty cherry spice, slight mint leave soil. Tomorrow will be better...but for a pnp and a chug-a-lug after work....pretty tasty stuff! LOVE these '08's! ++pts

  • I've heard one or two producers claim that this dirt is really Chambolle terroir, but this Petits Vougeot is most definitely not Chambolle style. This is a Burgundy that'll put hair on your chest... tons of brawny tannic muscle here and also brimming with rocks and gravel, the structure initially had me thinking Nuits or maybe even Pommard; it's the kind of Burgundy you should be drinking with a manly man steak, right off the bone, preferably after wrestling the buffalo to the ground with your bare hands. Grrrrr. Fortunately it's got dense enough fruit material in the dark crimson register to balance out the muscle. It seemed particularly tough initially because it also had some CO2 with made it even rougher, as is the fashion these days, but fortunately it was able to kick it after a glass and a shake.
