  • Bright pomegranate red with subtle aromas of cooked prunes, blueberry, Sauerkraut, blackberry jam, green pepper, leather, mushroom as well as dried foliage. Medium bodied with a refreshing acidity, clear and present and well woven in tannin. Pairs nicely with noble courses such as dough coated pork or Gigot with herb crust. Decant and serve in a Bordeaux Red Wine Glass at room temperature, 16-18°C.

The grapes grow on Serine, old Syrah vines in the Lieu-dits of Le Plomb, Besset, La Vaillère and Neve. They are picked and pressed as whole clusters, which adds more structure to the wine. Matured for 12 months in Barriques, of which 30% are new and all others occupied once.
Côte Rôtie is the northernmost part of the French Rhone Valley. Its name literarily means “burnt slope”, which is a reference to the sunbathed hills of the sub appellations Côte brune and Côte blonde.

  • Luckily I had a pretty good sniff of this when I decanted it at home, because it got killed by the preceding wines. Medium dark red. Meaty, peppery black cherry fruit, with hints of spice and roses. Tasty slightly rich flavours and a decently long finish.

  • Monthly Tuesday group "The Dead Sparrow" #021: Northern Rhône red (By JWS): Beautiful bouquet with herbs, tobacco, red and dark berries a well as some oak. On the palate a firm amount of acidity in the start, herbs, ink, chocolate and some green tannin. Evolves in the glass quite quickly.

  • Tasted blind. Medium (+) ruby/garnet, showing a little age. Slightly cloudy. The nose is medium (+) in intensity and complex, with aromas or ripe black fruit, a savoury meatiness, medicinal herbs, violets and earth. The palate is dry, with medium acidity, medium (+) tannins and medium alcohol (13%). The palate is consistent with the nose, with ripe black fruit, roasted vegetables, and smoked meats. With medium (+) body, flavor intensity and length, this is a classic, nicely balanced Old World Syrah. It is drinking very well now but arguably has several years left.

  • Deep red core with high optical density and medium reflectivity. Really nice intensity on the nose, with aromas of iodine-infused and toasted fruits (both red and dark; cherry, blackberry, plum), savory roasted meats, and spicy floral (violets) and herbal forest notes and some aromatic vegetal notes underneath (onion peel and garden earth). Really nice complexity on the nose, with swirling layers. Fresh and vibrant on the palate, with full body and medium acidity, and dry frame with medium tannins that provide a nice clean finish, but work to melt away the wine nicely, with medium intensity. A nice concentrated texture with graphitic carbon character. Flavours of dark fruits and earthy vegetals on the attack, with depth and broad appeal. Medium complexity of flavours at firsts that gain in intensity and add appealing layers toward the midpalate, with florals and roasted meats soaring over the deep grilled fruits, adding lifted support with iodine-tinged savory notes. Really nice overall, with lots going on and a ton of interest.

This is fantastic wine, with elegant power, showing a polished and refined character with fresh flavours and evolved personality. Lots of character and depth, this is highly enjoyable and well-made wine. Classic Northern Rhone here, with Cote-Rotie typicity and a really nice price. Outstanding! Ready to drink, with some time left for sure!

  • Beautiful shimmering blood red with medium plus to high optical density. Nice intense aromas of interesting complexity, with rich, roasted dark fruits (blackberry, plum, and cherry), with savoury meatiness, and aromatic lift from spiced flowers (like black pepper-infused roses and violets). Light in body with refreshingly high acidity, this is easy-drinking and open-textured, with diffuse grain on the medium plus tannins that give just a touch of rustic edge. Flavours of dark grilled fruits and earthy vegetables (mostly peels from sweet vegetables; not much green pepper here, just a touch of onion peel) on the attack, which stay very firm while the midpalate gains in intensity and complexity (a really nice thing when it happens!). Adding on are light bacon fat and tobacco smoke, which hover over the intense dark fruits, which brighten a touch toward the finish, showing sour dark cherry, which lingers together with savory smoked meats for good length. Very enjoyable, complex wine with an elegant framework. Harmony, balance, class, and intensity come together seamlessly, providing a thought-provoking and evolving taste experience- a real stunner, with nice value, and drinking gorgeously at the moment! 92+

Evolves with some air to yield tart strawberry and peppercorn dark fruits, adding interest and layers. Really great!

  • SYD OFFLINE Vivino Meet-Up - Feb 2016: Joint seventh favourite of 11 wines on the night for me. And a very different but elegant 4.0 from me. The nose displayed sour cherries, wet forest floor and nougat for me. The light to medium bodied palate followed suit, with a touch of pepper on the fine finish. So different. Totally stumped blind tasting this. But I really enjoyed it. A new wine experience for me.

  • devent to very good. There was forest aroma snd peppery sccent that are tyical for Northern rgone for me but the mid palate was hollow snd fruit was scant. Pleasant but nothing exciting . May improve w time but probably no further than a 'Very Good '

  • With smoked pork chops, roast vegtables, and sauerkraut.
I didn't take notes, but enjoyed the wine.
Nose was nice. There was a subtle smokiness to the wine on the palate that matched the pork chops nicely.
    A lovely wine.

  • Northern Rhone tasting (LOFT restaurant, Rishon LeZion east I.Z.): classic Côte Rotie elegant nose with white pepper, earth, red fruit, and minerality.
Quite acidic in the beginning, better after about an hour decanting. Nice red fruit, good aciditiy, but one cannot expected more from this vintage.

  • Northern Rhone vs...Tasting. White pepper, stony with violet/floral notes. I enjoyed the red fruit. This is a fine wine but no superstar.

  • classic pepper on the nose and the fruit and flavors seem to take a back seat to pepper at the moment.

  • Very acidic in the beginning, better after about an hour decanting. Nice red fruit, good aciditiy, but I actually expected more of this wine, regarding the producer and the price. It's certainly a good wine, but the QPR (€ 44,--) is not ok.

  • 60% opaque but light on its feet. The aromas on this are so distinctive - white pepper, earth, red fruit, and minerality. Quite elegant. The mouthfeel is light and it could give a little bit more of a punch without betraying its origin. That said, I do believe this provides a viable window into the pricey category Cote Rotie is.

An off vintage for Syrah-driven Northern Rhone so you can catch this one on a deal (I paid $29.99 and it carries a $95 release price).

  • I was told to wait on it it but I popped this to gauge it's merit. Violet and rose hue. Nose of uncracked peppercorn, but what a great palate. Pure fruit balance on the mineral and pepper spice with a full and rich finish. Tannin is a bit rough and it could be aged, but I do not feel I could enjoy it more. Outstanding despite a limited nose and tannin. Tonight 50+ 5+11+18+7= 91

  • Dark red. Beautiful floral nose with dark fruit and pepper. Textbook Cote Rotie nose but in the not too powerful but elegant way. Will be beautiful in 5 years I would think but not a Vin de Garde.
