Fairly dark gold color, enough so that I elected not to serve this wine to guests last night. Today in a burgundy-size glass, it's clear that the wine is not premoxed; that being said, it has lost some of the freshness of earlier times. Wax notes in nose and mouth, smooth and glossy texture, medium-weight, round -- a good wine for rillettes. Cellared since original release.

Pours a rich gold color with plenty of viscosity. Nose has some raisin (might be reaching the end of the window here) and honey and light citrus notes. Palate has honey, gentle acidity, and a hint of raisin, but is smooth and still very enjoyable.

Yet AGAIN - the last bottle was astounding and I drank the rest too soon. Astonishing. Firstly the colour, a deep, sharp yellow with a touch of green about it. Nose clean and crisp, citrussy. In the mouth, deep and very long. Great quality. Almost lemons, almost perfect. Bravo.

I had this as a standby for a 31 year old Coulée de Serrant and it was needed. I see from TNs on this page that bottles are variable but this one was a winner. Colour was quite deep gold. Nose was beautifully expressive with the typical quince, pineapple, pear, wax, honey and just a suggestion of coming oxidation but at a level which added complexity and didn't offend. Palate was medium+ bodied and not bone dry but benefited from the usual Huet mouth-watering acidity so as to avoid any impression of sweetness. Fruit was still quite primary and was infused with the aromas from the nose and there were fine flinty minerals, backbone and good length. It needed a touch more purity to be at the top of my Mount Olympus of Vouvray dry but very good.

HDH auction tasting at Tru (Chicago, IL): Slightly advanced colour. Doesn't seem to be prematurely oxidized. A bit wooly, with a touch of honey on the nose. The palate features really lovely acidity, but there's not too much else going on. Slight peach notes on the palate as well, but it's mostly just a big streak of acid. Not the most convincing bottle of chenin I've had.

In memory of SFJoe, I opened a 2002 LHL sec this afternoon. Initially smells just like a honeycomb. Some oxidation, but not an inappropriate level. Tons of acid with just enough fruit to keep it from being harsh. As it warms up and airs out, the fruit blossoms, bringing better balance.

Seems mature, at the beginning of a long drinking window. Pale yellow, no sign of oxidation. Tangy, wooly, intense Chenin. Had this with chicken fried rice, which was good, but might be better with a rich, white-fleshed fish in sauce.

Touche oxydative timide qui apporte de la complexité. Le fruit est mûr, sur les pommes et la poire. Belle bouche, longue, bonne acidité, finale sur l’amertume et une petite touche sucrée. Impressionnant.

Last bottle and a real winner. Full yellow. Acacia blossom and pear. Glossy but dry, glyceral entry with a powerful finish of soil and lemony acidity. Of course, as these things go, sorry I don't have more.

A night of Loire wines (Browntrout, Chicago IL): Nose: Very aromatic nose with fresh tones of peaches, nectarines, lanolin, white fruits, white florals, and there is a good amount of mineral tones too. There is very nice depth to this and it's very youthful.
Taste: Medium/full bodied with crisp medium+ acidity. The structure is still very youthful with fresh tones of peaches, nectarines, lanolin, white florals, and a lot of mineral tones.
Overall: This is a gorgeous and young Huet. There is very good freshness to this along with some very nice acidity. This has a good life ahead of it.

Loire Night (Browntrout - Chicago, IL): Big fan of this. Firm and fresh, this was elegant and undeniably Huet. Had that great lanolin, floral, mineral edge to it that gave it complexity and balance. Nice acidity on the finish, too.

Full yellow but no browning. Quince shines through on both the nose and palate. Atypically rich for a sec wine from Huet, but make no mistake, the acidity is there to provide strong framing. This has really come into its own over the past year or two and is superb now.

I have 12 of these, bought from unknown provenance at auction. I think the wine is in a great place at the moment, and does not show signs of letting up soon. N: waxy, lemon and honey, musk. P: wax, oily texture, perfectly balanced acidity. Long finish. Wonderful wine. 12% abv.

Spectacular showing for this wine. Golden in color. The nose has some apple cider notes, also fresh apple and a bit of ginger ale. Crisp and clean. Complex and layered. Full of life. Crisp apples and ginger carry thru to the palate. Great acidity. Worked great with food. Delicious. My last Sec from 02, but I have some of the sweeter ones still.

Fresh, pale gold. It seemed brighter and livelier the second night. A bit stinky the first with obvious acidity. Next day beautifully integrated with honeyed nose, and medium weight palate with a slight impression of sweetness. No oxidation. A lesson to me to treat these wines with the patience one would reserve for a red wine that had been entombed for a decade.

Deep yellow. This begins like a Vouvray and ends like a Savennieres. Pure pear fruit, vanilla and honey upfront. Actually could be mistaken for Demi-Sec in terms of its immediate richness and slight residual sugar. After the relatively friendly entry, very dry, intense finish with a swirl of sharp, grapefruit-like acidity and a soil drenched late impression, which I associate more with Clos du Bourg than Haut Lieu. Long and exceedingly nuanced.

Magnifique. Une grande richesse et opulence (qui reflète le millésime ?) à l'attaque : celle-ci fait penser à un demi-sec. Mais la finale termine sur le minéral, très tonique et vive. Quince overlords keeping a sullen grip on this young'un; powdery adolescent texture and plenty of chenin bitterness; and yet even in this shut-down phase I cannot stop myself from loving it, as it shows lots of nascent depth and promise. No sign of premox here!

Look at all them premox notes below. Mine was, obviously, better. I'm curious why the CT community is not discussing what is going on with this vintage in Tours in general. This was by far and away the best 2002 I've had this year (apart from the Demi-Sec Le Mont my friend brought over to pair with it) but it would appear not even the master is immune to premox. Question: which vintage is more troubled, White Burgundy 96 or Vouvray 02?

Short impressions: Light gold, complex nose of citrus and honey, on the palate impeccably balanced, gaining focus with additional air, fresh, livelyand very long. From 375... atypically dark in color, goldish rim. On the nose certainly has an oxidatized, not oxidative note, slightly honeyed, musty apple and pear notes, no signs barrique use or MLF, certainly hints of a bit of botrytis. On the palate the wine is dry, has very high acidity, no noticeable phenolics, low to moderate ETOH. Balanced wine with average length, good intensity, but little complexity or delineation of flavor. Not a ton of finesse really, full and weighty texture, decent expression of place. No doubt in the 375 format this wine didn't get enough sulfur... I haven't been to visit this estate in 13 years but pretty sure for 375's they don't alter SO2 levels which if low for a 750 get crushed by the 5 mg of O2 in the headspace of a 375...the oxidation really kills more delicate flavors and textural elements this wine typically offers... in the 375 somewhere between average and flawed wine...

Light gold color. Very little evidence of age in the glass. Aromatics are a bit muted, smells like lemons and rocks, with a hint of oxidization. On the palette the age comes through with a slight sherry-like quality, along with mushrooms, minerals, and glycerin. Not bad, but not exciting either. This was probably nicer in its youth.

This bottle was from .375ml. Color shows a bit of salmon to the golden hue. There's a distinct sherry note, Pre-mox CB, say it ain't so??? The sherried note settled down with time. I believe if we had followed a full bottle this would have subsided though I bit cautious as to it's further development. It was peculiar though. I liked this wine a lot. It showed a zippy acidity that I enjoy in Vouvray. Flavors of pear, a little lemon peel and verbena. Not as viscous as some Huet Sec's can be.

Drank with cheese and crackers- Purple Haze goat cheese with lavender and fennel pollen to be exact. Fabulous combination. The high acidity and closed nose mentioned in past comments has dissipated, leaving in its place a blossoming aroma and silky, voluptuous mouth feel. Quince dominates, with honeysuckle, apple, pear and apricot also apparent. Slight hint of residual sugar and light acidity call for food, but either sweet or savory could work. Will try to track down another couple bottles to try in another 6 months to 1 year.

This showed much better than a bottle did almost a year ago. Now the fruit was like that of an Asian pear-apple with emphasis on the apple part. Wonderful dry extract and weight with the barest hint of residual sugar. Strongly mineral finish. This really shows the great balance of the vintage and is edging toward maturity more quickly than I thought it would. Ah, Huet! What tremendously pure expressions of Chenin Blanc at every degree of sweetnesss.

Light gold. Powerful developing bouquet of apple, honey and lanolin. Classic Loire Chenin. Surprisingly full bodied and very viscous (although 12.8 ABV) the front and mid palate are all in rich baked apple. The back still shows the mineral acidity that is yet to integrate. The finish is long and dry. Many years in front of this still.

Yellow color. This does not have your basic pear/quince Vouvray profile. Instead, piercing, intense, higher toned nose of lemon oil, florality, and tangerine. Surprisingly full-bodied for a Sec wine, and I'd bet that an impression of minimal sweetness is the glycerine rather than much residual sugar. Finishes with brisk acidity and a strong dose of soil. Give it time, lots of time.

The Other France (Fugaise in Minneapolis): Reserved nose. On the palate this has a heavier weight, tangy acidity, and is slightly sweet. Tastes of grapefruit and pear. I would be interested to try this again in a few years and see if it has come together better.

Opened on 9/20/06 and then the last part of the bottle was consumed 11 days later. This is showing some interesting earthy / mineral notes, along with focused ctirus and green apple fruit. Rather rigid acidity was less noticeable and the wine actually more complex and enjoyable when I drank the last glass (which had been sealed in a 4 oz bottle) 11 days after opening.

Last Monday Tasting Group (Fisher Compound): Light pale coloring, edging towards slight golden. Lighter lanolin aromatics that previous Sec wines, but very attractive. This wine is very focused, but has so much going on. On the palate there is a slight hint of RS, but there was wonderful balance between the RS and acidity. Nice weight. The finish was good +, but not great.

Right now, this is all spine. The creaminess to the fruit that was here on release has all gone, and the palate sensation isn't much more than a very sharp apple cider. Notwithstanding the sharp structure, the fruit is flat and simultaneously muddled. On the one hand I did not like the way this wine performed today, but on the other hand I'm pleased that it's not aging as sluggishly as I'd expected.

Double Blind Whites and Reds (My house): $16.99 full retail (375ml). Ultrafresh fruit on the nose - red cherry, quince and a floral component. Firm acid / mineral frame. Well balanced. Long. Excellent young wine. I contributed this wine to the line-up so I knew what it was but, double blind, the group all loved the wine but were guessing it was from Germany or Alsace.

Another oxidised woody one. This case proving very variable

Initially on opening it is very tight. Medium gold color. Nose blossoms with a 2 + hour decant. Lots of honey, florals, just a gorgeous nose.
Penetrating acidity in the mouth, medium to long finish. Really nice.

(at Cru – NYC) Golden color. Lovely combination of honeysuckle richness and balancing acid. A very cool way to start off a meal as it makes the mouth dance while providing complexity and interest without heaviness. I like these wines a lot. (17.5)

Fantastic Chenin. Juicy, bright, penetrating stuff. The acidity is like biting into a perfectly ripe green apple - refreshingly tart. Thick without any heaviness. Long on the palate.

Delicious and refreshing, with wonderfully slatey flavors. However, the Le Mont bottling is a hair more memorable, with more vivid fruit and even greater minerality.
