A fun trio of 2009 Echezeaux (E. Rouget, Meo-Camuzet, DRC). All three were in the very front end of their drinking window . My ranking was Rouget, DRC (a close second), Meo. The Rougeot opened up early and had a soulfulness that I loved. The Meo held back most of what will likely be very enticing one day. The DRC started slow and ultimately brought the most smiles to the group. I suspect this tasting in 2033 will be even more rewarding, as these 2009's are very early days.

Wow, great nose here, reminiscent of the Leroy style with red fruit, cinnamon. Ripeness of 2009 coming though without overripness. Very light color, gently extracted. Awesome, bummer about the price today of the Rouget bottles.

A lost Friday afternoon gathering – Selosse, Cotat, Vatan, Ente, Red Burgs including 2011 Rousseau CSJ blind! (Blacksalt, Washington DC): Served blind along with the 09 Forey Echezeaux. Rich and opulent nose displaying blackberry, caramel, milk chocolate and sap. Excellent concentration, beautifully layered black fruit, silk and polished, perfect amount of acidity, nicely integrated tannins and a long sweet black fruit driven finish with a hint of oak at the end. Showing a lot of opulent fruit. It needs another decade to reach the early maturity. We all guess correctly.

Rouget Afterparty (Chez Holmes - Chicago IL): Very late night pop and pour. Ripe with lots of diverse aromas and flavors. This comes across as so ripe and 2009, but finishes with so much power and nuance. Great now, greater potential.

Wines Tasted at HDH Auction (Tru - Chicago IL): In flight with 2002 and 2005 vintages. Tasted multiple times over 4 hours. Ripe and delicious black berry and red cherry on nose and palate with licorice, espresso, brown baking spice throughout. This comes across as so tasty and precocious that it is easy to miss the serious power and structure coming through on its finish. Fun now, with serious long-term potential.

Absolutely beautiful nose of ripe red and blue fruit, elegant floral notes and very subtle spice. Lithe and detailed on the palate. Outstanding texture and balance. Really lovely lingering finish. This not a powerhouse, but overwhelms you with subtle charm.

Tasted it against Liger Belair Echezeaux 2009. The Rouget had a classic mature Burgundy nose, with a sweeter mid palate than Liger Belair. The Liger Belair was more toasted oak (signpost Liger Belair nose) and reductive aromas. Both had a very long finish. The Liger Belair was more dense on the back palate and rode on its high acidity, while the Rouget had less protruding acidity but rode on its high sweet fruit. I would drink Liger Belair for the nose, and Rouget for the palate at this moment. Both are monumental wines, which will be interesting to follow. I'm glad I have a few more of each in the cellar...

Cellar Tasting with Emmanuel Rouget (Vosne-Romanee): Barrel tasting at Domaine. Floral to start with red and black cherry. Sweet fruit on palate, overt oak for right now, this is a big, dense wine that will most likely need lots of time to fully balance.

This presented much older than a bottle last year, but that was a positive. Lovely juice.

Slow ox two hours. Pretty nose, lots of spice, darker side of Vosne, some florals under the earthy notes. Light palate. 92-93

Much more closed and subdued. After 2 hours it got interesting and the spice came out but still very little in the nose

Magnum poured by rouget. Deep and complex with candy, wild berries, red fruit, soy, spice and herbs. Immense potential
