Introduction

A long day or hard work. I know I forgot to write TNs a few wines tasted. Oh well.

Flight 1 (29 Notes)

  • 2012 Bonneau du Martray Corton-Charlemagne 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

Tasting, brief note. Great floral start with ripe apple aromas, some peach. Equally ripe flavors come across fat and lush to start, followed by a more elegant middle and finish with sneaky structure emerging. Good now, better in a few more years.

  • 2001 Coche-Dury Puligny-Montrachet Les Enseignères

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet

Floral start with some dried stone fruit and lemon peel. Good power and balance, but more advanced than this should be at this age.

  • 1997 Domaine Ramonet Montrachet 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru

Starts with wintergreen, ripe apple and faint tropical and vanilla hints. Same flavor profile with very good concentration and excellent structural balance for the vintage. This was popped and poured, best (93) when first poured vs an hour later (91).

  • 2004 François Raveneau Chablis 1er Cru Vaillons

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru

Tasting, brief note. Not at the same quality level of previous bottle I recall from the past. Ripe orchard fruit aromas that even had riper tropical hints. Leaner flavor profile that was very chalky with a more acid-driven finish than I'd prefer.

  • 1991 Domaine d'Auvenay (Lalou Bize-Leroy) Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatières 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru

Much like another bottle from a few months ago. Lots of ripe apple and peach, great spice, great intensity. Can easily be mistaken for a wine that's too old based on color and ripeness, but this has substantial stuffing and structure.

  • 2012 Coche-Dury Meursault Les Chevalières

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault

Served alongside the Coche-Dury 2012 Perrieres. Ripe apple and some lemon skin aromas with great spice. By virtue of the wine's aromatic start I was expecting this to be a mid-90s point wine, but found the palate slightly less appealing. Ripe orchard fruit flavors with a hint of perceived sweetness to start, followed by fairly assertive acidity at the finish. This has the substance to be a great Villages level wine when it integrates a little more and sheds a few rough edges, but I'd say 90 or 91 points today.

  • 2012 Coche-Dury Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

Served alongside the Coche-Dury 2012 Meursault Les Chevalières. Enticing aromatic start to both of the wines. I found this Perrières slightly more intense with greater depth of spice and apple. The flavor profiles however were very different. with lots of Meyer lemon, ripe apple and pear coming through here with great depth and concentration, almost perfectly framed by acidity and structural support. Already sensational today with great long-term cellarworthiness.

  • 2003 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Aux Boudots 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru

Red and black cherry aromas with Vosne-styled spice. Plate came across as fatter, less spice-driven with modest depth and length.

  • 2006 Gros Frère et Sœur Clos Vougeot Musigni 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

Tasting, brief note. Red and black cherry on nose and palate that came across as ripe and tasty, but slightly simpler than I'd hope from this great vineyard. Moderate depth.

  • 2002 Emmanuel Rouget Echezeaux 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

In flight with 2005 and 2009 vintages. Tasted several times over 4 hours. Certainly my favorite of the flight for today, also close to my favorite for its long-term potential. Lots of brown baking spice with dense red fruit. Same on nose and palate. Moderate density vs others in the flight.

  • 2005 Emmanuel Rouget Echezeaux 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

Served alongside the 2002 and 2009 vintages. I was skeptical about opening this wine today and continue to be skeptical about the pleasure 2005s are providing today, even with this bottle open and decanted 2 hours before serving. I then tasted this multiple times over the following 4 hours. Lots and lots of ripe red and black berries and cherries come through everywhere, nicely supported with background Asian five spice. Powerful fruit is not quite a match at present for the massive structure that never softened. i really like this wine's potential, while others liked its performance today better than I could.

  • 2009 Emmanuel Rouget Echezeaux 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

In flight with 2002 and 2005 vintages. Tasted multiple times over 4 hours. Ripe and delicious black berry and red cherry on nose and palate with licorice, espresso, brown baking spice throughout. This comes across as so tasty and precocious that it is easy to miss the serious power and structure coming through on its finish. Fun now, with serious long-term potential.

  • 1969 Domaine Clair-Daü Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

Bottle with great color, great fill. Mature black fruit aromas and flavors with a meatiness and that intense character of a mushroom medley cooked and reduced for hours. Gevrey notes of leather and animale coming through clearly.

  • 1996 Domaine Dujac Bonnes Mares 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru

Served and tasted single blind alongside Dujac 1997 Bonnes Mares. I was in the minority preferring this 1996, but for most tasters it was close. Perfumed and spice driven start with lots of red and black berry aromas and flavors, powerful but with restraint. While most others loved the lushness of the 1997's fruit that still retained great freshness, i slightly preferred the balance and structural power here in the 1996.

  • 1997 Domaine Dujac Bonnes Mares 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru

Served and tasted blind alongside its 1996 counterpart. Most tasters preferred this vs the 1996, while I had a slight preference the other way. This 1997 had both great spice and ripe red fruit, shockingly fresh and powerful for the vintage. Lush and exciting throughout, I found this slightly less structured and balanced vs what turned out to be the 1996. But both were amazing.

  • 1997 Alain Hudelot-Noëllat Richebourg 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Richebourg Grand Cru

Tasting, brief note. Classic Vosne aromatic start with mature red fruit, subtle baking spice, hints of leather and dried rose petals, Good flavors, but slightly less interesting, emphasizing mature fruit and earthy element with moderate spice and length.

  • 2009 Henri Boillot Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatières 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru

From 3L. Ever-so-slightly reductive to start. Floral notes with ripe apple, some tropical hints. Good mineral and acid-driven textures emerge behind ripe fruit in the middle. Good now, probably best to enjoy now through 2020.

  • 1993 Domaine Joseph Roty Charmes-Chambertin Très Vieilles Vignes 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru

Less evolved or exciting vs when tasted last year from magnum. Black and dense with some barnyard hints. A bit more firm than I'd prefer, with the structure slightly obscuring the excellent flavors.

  • 1985 Haegelen-Jayer Clos Vougeot 87 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

Tasting, brief note. Lots of leather and barnyard with hints of mature red and black cherry. Signs of what was probably a better wine 10 years ago.

  • 2004 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Echezeaux 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

Tasting, brief note. Lots of spice and slightly maturing red fruit. Faint hints of 2004 but coming across more as green pepper than anything unpleasantly bitter or herbaceous. Very good now.

  • 2005 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Amoureuses

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

Tasting, brief note. Bottle had been open several hours. Showcases the best of what I enjoy about both Mugnier and this vineyard in particular (which I often prefer to his Musigny). Layers of aroma and flavors unfold each time to sniff or taste from glass. Fresh and rich red berry and cherry, steeped with spice. Perfect balance and density, while retaining an incredibly elegant weightlessness.

  • 2007 Domaine des Lambrays Clos des Lambrays 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru

Tasting, brief note. Forward and very pleasant red berry flavors and aromas with baking spice hints. Moderate depth. Very good now.

  • 1989 Domaine Méo-Camuzet Corton 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru

Served to me double blind. I thought this from a ripe vintage but thought it much younger than 1989. Lots of sweet red and black berries with baking spice. Long and well textured.

  • 1998 Domaine Ponsot Clos de la Roche Vieilles Vignes 87 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru

Tasting, brief note. Lots of fruit with good ripeness for the vintage. Earth starting to come through as well. More firm and structured vs other times I have had this wine, and definitely less pleasurable.

  • 2011 Coche-Dury Corton-Charlemagne 96 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

Popped and poured, then enjoyed over an hour. Broad cross-section of fruit and spice aromas and flavors, mostly lemon, lemon and orange peel, ripe apple, anise and clove with great floral support. A dense and almost meaty white wine with stony textures that bring everything together on finish.

  • 2002 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée St. Vivant 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Romanée St. Vivant Grand Cru

Popped and poured, this came across as more mature than I expected based on when I've had this wine before, although I haven't tasted this in ~4 years. The maturing fruit aromas and flavors made the wine's spice and whole cluster character quite pronounced. Less exciting overall than I recall from the past, I am confident this will emerge in another 5+ years as something really exciting.

  • 1999 Comte Armand Pommard 1er Cru Clos des Epeneaux

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru

Lots of cherry, mostly red but with plenty of black, on nose and palate. Still firm and backward, the potential is clearly here but this still needs 5+ years in the cellar to really live up to what I think is its 93-94 point potential.

  • 2009 François Raveneau Chablis 1er Cru Vaillons 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru

Very enjoyable sense of lemon peel and lemon scone. Perhaps a little fatter than the typical Chablis, but Raveneau structure clear and present from middle to finish. Ripeness belies this wine's ageworthiness.

  • 2011 Domaine Michel Lafarge Volnay 1er Cru Clos des Chênes 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

Popped and poured. More black fruit than usual for Lafarge Volnay with hints of black and white pepper. Perhaps slightly less spice and floral elements today vs other vintages. This comes across as taut and austere given the wine's structure. Nothing green or bitter at all, but this will require patience. Exactly as I recall from La Paulee last month.
