  • Just about fully resolved, meaty and savory and peppery with relaxed structure. Delicious. No reason to wait longer.

  • what a pleasant surprise this wine turned out to be. I held on to a bottle for several years wondering if it would develop further and was rewarded for my patience. Subtle rhone based nose that blossomed after a 2 hr double decant. mild peppery front palate that moved through to a nice lingering finish. This is a very nice wine that should hold for several years if you have any in the cellar. Wish I had more

  • Perfect cork, no seepage.

Agree with previous TN. Not open, not especially evolved. Just a bit flat and boring St Jo. Fell apart after 24h of opening. Puzzling in light of this dependable producer.

    Drink or avoid.

  • Good color with no signs of 10 years of age. Classic liquorice & pepper nose with plums. Fresh on the palate but somewhat closed and not divulging much character. Not sure if this has seen its best days or if it still needs time? Some of these French 2005's are a conundrum - they still seem to be closed or are already fading. The drinking window has been mercilessly short if non-existent in some cases...

  • Grey red color. Super austere, muted nose, but with some gravity if not super-complex. tart cherry, white pepper, twig, ash, Better with food.

  • Pretty disappointed with this wine, especially after all of the reviews - I thought i had a totally different bottle, until i read Sweetstuff's review, which was spot-on on the nose. Definitely more of a Petite Sirah like quality. TONS of pine, with a little anise and other medicinals, and a fair amount of metallically on the palate.

where this wine fell short for me was a major lack in structure - it wasn't flabby, but it was way too restrained for my taste. It had the mouthfeel of a feminine Burgundy, which is fine for Pinot, but not what i'm looking for from N. Rhone

  • Really good but only about halfway there to the Rule of 15. Wait.

  • Short notes since I didn't write them down when I opened the bottle two weeks ago. I would concur with Mrbuzz, though I found the nose to be a little more restrained than described there. Then again the wine really really wants more time. Next day it had smoothed out quite a bit and gave a hint as to what the wine would be like in another 3 years. Gonna bury the next bottle in the cellar.

  • Love this wine! Totally Rhone.....animal, iron, leather, white pepper...to go along with beautiful creamy raspberry, plum, smoked cherry fruit...solid structure with earthy minerals, and fresh acidity. The nose is amazing....very floral, blood iron funk, dusty white pepper spice. Will drink well for many more years.

  • Notes are consistent with everyone else's posts. This is first bottle that I opened, and I think I will wait a year or two before tackling again. And then I would like to do so side-by-side with US producer, Renard, with its Truchard offering that has similar qualities.

  • TN: Philippe Faury Saint-Joseph Viellies Vignes 2005. $28; Morgan and York, Ann Arbor, MI; Kermit Lynch; Berkeley, CA. Now Morgan and York will be carrying most of the Lynch imports, the only such store besides Kermit's own that I know, and convenient to Piqua (only 180 miles).

Purple to the edge but not quite opaque.

This has a nearly Petite Sirah-like nose: Tar, cherries, blood, Pondicherry pepper, and incipient new-cured leather, smoke, dusty minerals, pine, and teases of violets--a huge, almost new-world like primary nose. There's a wood-like note that begins to emerge with air, and a nice vanilla-like sweetness. Beautifully polished surfaces and nice things going on underneath.

On the palate the wine is medium-bodied and has some dexterity. The flavors are blood and orange peel-oriented, but confirming the above. The typical acidity in young Rhone wines, including this one, often hint of volatility but of course that's just an illusion and not reality. There are moderate and very ripe tannins here and currently a touch of metallicity associated with them. This wine is one that I'd give plenty of cellaring to--not because it's unpleasant, but because it shows so much promise. A wonderful introduction to M. Faury's style, which is to use little or no new oak for his wines--he prefers neutral oak or cement vats. All the fruit is here and so there's nothing to be lost by giving this some time.

A fine combination of a forceful nose and palate with plenty of delicacy around the edges and on the finish. Great value.

  • A bottle that I hand-carried back from France last year. Showing as well or better than the bottle I tasted at the domaine. Big, bloody, gamy, meaty St. Joseph. Ripe red and black fruit, iron/blood, black pepper, and mineral. Ripe tannins on the finish. Wild, wooly, gutsy stuff. Excellent.

  • This is a first for me. First thing you notice is THE NOSE! WOW....blood, iron, smoked cherries, raspberries, white pepper, ash. Floral and sweet too, like some Viognier blended ala Cote Rotie. Smooth and lush in the mouth...the flavors from the nose carry over...lots of mineral, blood meat, pepper. Not as open in the mouth...a little tight and short on the finish. Big structure...needs some years to really show itself. Gorgeous Rhone....old school, dolled up! +pts

  • Tasted at the domaine. 3,000 bottles imported by Kermit Lynch (out of 10,000 produced). 40-60 year old vines. Deeper and smokier than the regular St. Joseph bottling. On the palate, this is quite spicy and smokey, mith meat and dried black / red fruits. Mineral core. Nice balance and weight. Very impressive. Note: I've had this five or six times from bottle since tasting it at the domaine, and it is indeed a rather sauvage, gutsy, honest, old-school, almost anachronistic St. Joseph. I love this wine. Lionel Faury recommended keeping the V.V. for 6-7 years and added that it has over 10 years of life ahead of it... I'm also really excited for the 2006, having tasted several components at the domaine...

  • 2007 France Trip - Cheze, Faury, Ferraton, Coursodon (Northern Rhone): Complex, layered nose of red and black fruits, soy. Meaty, bloody, and perfumed. Iron/mineral. Nice ripeness. Big structure and ripe tannin. Great old-school St. Joseph. Excellent.
