PNP. Medium yellow. Sweet powdered lemon candy, iodine and broth on the nose. The palate is full and deep, sweet Meyer lemon fruit and an open knit texture that is enjoyable but lacks tension and acidity; not on par with the 08 Valmur.

I tasted this bottle during a Chablis night at Sushi Shinkai in Seoul, together with Christian Moreau's Les Clos, William Fevre's Les Clos, and Vincent Dauvissat's Les Clos. As expected and without a doubt, Francois Raveneau's Clos was the final boss and stood out better than others. I loved the finest Chablis poised balance of nose and palate. Alas, its price tag is now at an insane level, I missed the time when the Raveneau was approachable.

Dégustation a l'aveugle Quel beau nez ! Grand vin !

Wines for the Acker Merrall Bicentennial Auction (The Pool - New York NY): Walk around tasting. From magnum. Very rich and powerful with clear Grand Cru density and so much stuffing, yet this didn't seem classically Chablis or particularly minerally, even on its (very long) finish. For Grand Cru Chablis, I would say this is "92 points" today, but I just think it needs more time and will show better with more cellar time, so I choose to be an optimist. But I would prefer other vintages for this great wine (first time I have tasted this 2009).

The 2009 Raveneau Le Clos is showing well already. Expressive and bold with intense saline flavours and waxy texture. Though I suspect this is not Raveneau’s strongest vintage, the fruit ripeness is well balanced. Full bodied with broad-shouldered tree fruits and seashell. Drink now to 2037. (91/100)

Initially served a bit too cold I wasn't quite so sure on this one and for me as recent Raveneau Clos experiences go the 2010 clearly had the edge and the 2008 was also superior. The 2009 is a bit fat and clumsy and I probably missed the precision and acidity.

Magnificent. Reference standard wine that can run circles around virtually all the rest of Chablis and most of the Cote de Beaune.
Chiseled, dense, multi-layered. Needed a couple hours to reveal itself, more and more nuance with time. This wine has a unique ability to match with many dishes that commonly would be associated with red.
Majestic and beautiful, demanding attention and concentration.

Very fresh and just a little shy at first. Really dense and sappy in the mouth, with layered of orchard fruit and preserved citrus in the mouth. It breathes to show some blossom and smoky mineral and it powerful and complex Chablis that is just starting to drink very well. So much more in the tank though.

Uncorked 2 hours before serving into Zalto Bordeaux glass (“Flower” day): Brilliant medium golden to the eyes.
Citrus fruits like grapefruits, zest peels all wrapped in incredible elegant spices and white florals. Quite hedonistic and deep.
Great harmony of flavours on palate, signature saline minerality and perfectly judged acidity but nothing overwhelming. Calm and confident. Really flavourful and persistent finish with toasty notes.
94-95 points to me on this showing.

Tsunami of dry extract follows the elegant, graceful, sweet attack. The length and persistence is gobsmacking. I wanted to chew this wine as much as drink it, it was so substantial, so dense. Tremendous minerality and well-balanced acidity. Aroma of white flowers and struck match are accompanied by a Montrachet-like dry honey.
A super Les Clos. This is one of the best Raveneau I have had the privilege to drink, it’s so expressive and balanced. Maybe it gets better but I can’t imagine by much, only different with extended age perhaps. I recommend to drink within a few years to enjoy this brilliant phase. This is absolutely equal to the very best vineyards and producers from Côte de Beaune.

Expressive nose displaying intense yellow citrus, lemon oil, lemon curd, honeysuckle, honey, beeswax, a hint of cedar and crushed rocks. Incredible concentration, layers upon layers of slightly coiled yellow citrus fruit, dense yet laser like focus, bright acidity, incredible amount of mineral and a long sweet yellow fruit driven finish with crushed rock and honey at the end. This beautifully expresses the 09 richness and the Les Clos focus and minerality.

A private tasting @ JD's home. Tasted blind. This was served in the same flight with the 2009 Les Clos by Dauvissat. This wine for me was the clear winner, a lot more intensity, tension and nerve!

Winos' excellent adventure in France; 6/22/2017-6/27/2017 (All over France): Pop and pour, coiled nose displaying ripe citrus, lemon curd, honey, white flowers, saline, strong mineral a la wet stone and a hint of honey. Excellent concentration, oily, dense and coiled. Bright acidity and a long mineral and honey driven finish. With air, it opens up, displaying generous citrus fruit and honey. The ripeness is in line with the other 09 Raveneaus; however, the wine displays a greater precision and focus. Needs minimum ten more years to reach maturity.
92-93+ pts

2009 Pre-mox dinner assessment, served single blind. Groups # 1 , My # 1 wine
Medium gold color. Lemony sea breeze and oyster shell on the nose, with some crisp lime rind elements. Lovely palate, lemony, rich and glyceryl without the usual tension and energy that this wine has. Best of the flight but still short of expectations.

93+ pts

The 2009 is a classic Clos from Raveneau, blossoming in the decanter to give up lovely aromas of lemon oil, honeysuckle, cornmeal and wet rocks. Deep—almost bottomless—and with beautiful purity and focus despite its glossy texture, this wine is surprisingly approachable for so young a Clos, but it really deserves another five or six years in the cellar before really getting to grips with it.

Nick's Spectacular Birthday Dinner (Hippopotamus Restaurant, Wellington): Bright gold colour. A ripe, rich bouquet but with strong minerality, crushed river boulders and gun metal. Also, aromas of citrus, peaches and other orchard fruits. Not a classical Chablis nose, by any means, with little or no salinity, seashell or limestone nuance. Blind, I might well have had this bouquet as white Burgundy, not Chablis. On palate, the Chablis does not have the biting acidity or marine flavours of a classic Chablis year like a 2007 or 2010. It has as hint of Corton Charlamagne about it. It is an excellent Chardonnay, on a par with many a Grand Cru white Burgundy. The rich, rounded flavours include lemon, orchard and some tropical fruits and strong minerality, so that the wine 'wets your teeth', as JC says. There is oak here too, but the fruit volume to support it. A beautiful oily, tactile structure. Very elegant. Multi-layered with great complexity and detail. This wine was presented as one of the best examples of food matching I have ever had. Each mouthful of the sashimi - salmon, tuna or fresh oyster - pulled different flavours, nuances and dimensions out of the wine, illustrating its absolute class. There's not probably a huge future ahead of this Chablis, but who cares? It's gorgeous now!

Initially reticent, it opened up a bit after 1 hr in the decanter but was not as forthcoming as expected. I chose the 2009 to drink rather than the 2008 or the 2010 as I hoped the 2009 would offer more now. Dare I say I was a touch disappointed with this bottle. However there is a plus...
Beautifully perfumed and penetrating nose, with remarkably fine and elegant palate, although not showing the same penetration as the nose. Flavours of oysters / minerals among some white peach, with a touch of tangerine on the finish. Very classy but needs more time to show some more emphasis.

A plethora of crushed rocks, lime slate, fresh grass, lemon zest , white peaches and nectarine with rock salt. Very well packaged and displaying layered yet monolithic Chablis minerality. Fresh yet not biting with gentle acidity and a smooth rounded luscious mouthfeel of orange blossoms circulating the mouth. Very drinkable now v unlike the usually tight unforgiving young raveneaus I have tasted.

A private lunch (Restaurant La Côte Saint-Jacques ***, Joigny, France): Like the 2007, incredibly and immediately attractive, with that amazingly floral, almost Riesling-like quality, seamless, perfectly harmonious, with beautifully integrated acidity, lemon cream flavours on the palate, hint of older wood, wonderful balance and interplay between gras and fraicheur that almost but not completely hides the minerality; excellent length. Very complex, deceptively easy to drink, a very stylish rendition of Les Clos in the context of a riper vintage.
