Deep garnet red with a touch of ruby. Lovely and aged nose with forest floor, mushrooms, a touch savory, earthiness, dark plums and a touch of crushed gravel. Well rounded and medium tannins (6/10). Rich with some age, layers of dark plums, bark, and a touch of gravel. Beautifully integrated and long finish. Drink till 2023.

This btl has some room to get better still and showed amazingly well considering it was opened at the restaurant around 5:45 and drank by 8:15. I liked the focus of the palate and a tobacco / black tea element. Very nice btl from a producer with a loyal following but seems to attract little interest on the wine boards. Don't know what this sells for but it is great option if $65 or less. 2001 seems to be a great vintage.

Mixed Wines Mini-offline (Tilia, Mpls): Very dark red/purple color. PNP, drank 2 glasses over an hour. Nose starts off with lots of mint, black fruits emerge with cassis and mulberry, nice vanilla notes, damp earth and spice. The palate is coating and soft, medium-full body, cassis, mint, berry, spice, some oak. Good balance, medium plus finish, medium grained tannins that are starting to resolve. This improved nicely in glass. Decanting is still advised.

Wonderfully mellowed cabernet, still required several hours of decanting to reveal a lush, smooth, approachable Napa cab. Could have cellared for a number of years yet.

Finally got around to my second and last bottle of this stuff. Popped and poured, dark purple color with absolutely no bricking. Enormous nose of raspberry and chocolate, reminded me of Lindt's raspberry ganache that I used to eat as a kid. Opened up with time, but then seemed to fall apart 3 hours later or maybe just went very tight? Initial attack of sweetness buffered by relatively strong tannins, on the palate the raspberry ganache gave way to sour cherries and then vanilla. Medium bodied. Definitely not near the end of its life and quite enjoyable during the first 2 hours.

Interesting wine that frankly seems a bit on the young side still. Dark deep garnet. Cabernet nose of cassis, maple syrup, and dark plums that expanded with time open and in the glass. Soft tannin, but plenty of structure left that suggests a few more years in the bottle would not hurt.

Wonderful classic cab all the way. I have not been too high on 2001 Cal cabs but this one is certainly an exception. Classic cab nose, great fruit, excellent finish, and smooth tannins. Ate with italian sausage/peppers and went great. I believe that this is at or near it's peak. Lot's were skeptical about 2001's but I actually wish I purchased more of this one.

I think TedP's comments below are insightful. I've had this bottle in my cellar for several years and never got around to drinking it based on the tepid CT reviews from a year or two ago. So here on a Monday night, it was time to open it and get it out of the way. Ooops..............
Dark fruits, cassis and a bit of brown sugar and spice on the nose. On the palate, the fruit is strong and showing hints of secondary development. Supported by some acidity and fine tannins in the background. Some slight clipping on the finish keeps my score from being higher, though perhaps if I had decanted it? If I had more of these, I wouldn't be in a rush to drink them. For my tastes, and I like older cabs, this should last through 2015

I have had 2 bottles each year from 2005 to 2009, and find that this wine is becoming more balanced. Though it seemed to initially have been maturing quickly, the process has slowed and mineral notes are now becoming more apparent and balancing the fruit. The tannins are better rounded. Still a fair amount of fruit on the the nose, which I like. I'm glad that I have held this wine, as I was not overly impressed the last couple years. I feel that this wine is close to maturity but continues to have room to grow.

Not quite your classic big Napa cab, but pretty darn good. Decanted 1.5 hrs before drinking. Still a little tight as tannins came forward. Still some strong fruit flavors of spicy dark raspberries, plums, dark cherries. Some tart tanginess remains - could benefit from further aging.

My third bottle with consistent tasting notes. Lovely nose with cassis and lots of dark fruit. Mide-palate is full, with hints of herbs and chocolate, with suble integrated tannins. Very robust and bright fruit completements the notes of herbs. The finsih was about 30 seconds, but full and rich. Overall a very nice bottle of wine for 50 bucks.

The much hyped Grgich Hills 2001 Cab was found in a liquor store near my work for $50. This is the same bottle that the winery refused to sell me direct just a few weeks ago in Rutherford. Due to warm weather, the bottle was a bit hot in my house and affected the wine. The result was overpronounced alcohol on the nose and palate. Chocolate, cedar, black fruit, some earthiness, slight hints of berry. Could be much better and will try after storing a few months in the cellar. I definitely think this was put off by the heat.

There has been some debate about this wine, so I wanted to see what I thought. I had been on a run of great wines lately and had been starting to think that I was rating everything a little bit high, but this brought the average down a little bit. Initially, hollow nose with a few hints of raspberry and vanilla. Somewhat unbalanced at first, so I gave it some time in the decanter. It did go through about a 20 minute peroid where one could detect a few nice flavors on the midpalate....cherry, raspberry, cedar, and vanilla....but that blew over quickly. After only about 45 minutes in the decanter it was hot, alcoholic, hollow, and primary. You can see that maybe at one time it was a decent wine, but it has definitely fallen off. Unfortunate, I wanted to like this. Not even a remotely decent purchase for a much overhyped wine........One must consider the possibility that there is considerable bottle variation with this wine as many people have rated it highly.

I don't understand what folks want in a wine if they rate this at 77. This is a great cabernet, maybe a little overpriced, but delicious. It has great balance, depth and that California cabernet character that I look for. Is it a 90 caymus Special Selection, probably not, but it is a great cab.

Primary, grapey aroma with a touch of confectionary blueberries. Very rich, fresh, gushy fruit on the palate with some oak spice and alcoholic heat and a very polished, shiny texture notwithstanding the serious tannic buffer. Extended airing gives it a more restrained red-fruit profile but it's a pretty generic assembly-line Napa Cab.
