A fine nose that suggests plummy fruit and a hot hillside. On the palate the fruit is muted but there are great notes of garrigue that are interesting and long on the finish. This really settles well and improves over several hours. It has depth, layers, dark beauty, fine tannins and lots to give. Ace.

Pnp. Medicinal red fruit to start giving way to taut, candied berries and spice. Consistent. Continues to be in an ideal phase and should be for a good while.

Deep garnet color with minimal signs of aging. This was immediately highly aromatic after opening with rich smells of blackberry, sage, thyme, and cassis. After a brief period of oxygen exposure, it evolved from slightly hard to a soft plush wine. It is still youthful but a great pleasure to drink at present.

CdP blind tasting. Illuminating evening, while there were some nice and complex wines there were also quite a few misses. Issues revolved around either not aging well and becoming pruney, oxidative with cooked fruit aromas or just being too heavy/sweet/alcoholic. TN: Nose of farmyard and brett, complex and masculine. The palate is precise and has very good acidity, they managed the warm vintage very well here.

Deep garnet color. Enticing nose of candied red cherries. After an appealing start, the initial taste and feel on the palate are disappointing. The wine is a little disjointed with an over-ripeness combined with too much oak. I have been a long term fan of this wine and have a vertical in my cellar but this bottle was disappointing. I am going to wait on trying the next one to give it a little more aging as it may improve (said hopefully).

Opened 90 mins before dinner with the Thursday group at Christys When I first poured into the decanter the nose was beautiful grenache, white pepper and meaty aromas Palate was a bit tight, dry fruit and very strong tannins I think wine is closed now Or needed more time on the decanter go open up
In a great place. Opened 2 hours before pouring. No decant. A bit medicinal at first. Nice backbone and great development in the glass. Red fruit and spice with a hint of apricot and saline. Paired great with grilled lamb and an octopus salad. I would think it has plenty of years ahead but no need to wait!

Slightly darker fruit than usual for Charvin but still in the elegant mold with great purity and finesse. Getting better with age, there’s now some tertiary notes underneath the red fruit. Very long and deep. Great effort given the vintage….

Dark ruby, subdued nose that opens to reveal dark fruit and garrigue, and rich smooth mouthfeel, more graceful than expected for a wine with ~15% alcohol (although that was the style then). Tasted in conjunction with Janasse Chaupin CdP, same vintage, at a send-off dinner for friends who were departing on a trip to France. The Chaupin had more fruit and was more elegant (not a surprise), and the Charvin was more savory and equally delicious.

Nicely balanced with plenty of life left. Probably some upside remaining with another 3-5 years under its belt. It's a little bit hot for my palette but I can still enjoy for the rich fruit and complex flavors. Seems like enough acidity to keep it balanced enough to really enjoy.

Good fill and healthy corkage with no seepage beyond 5 mm. Restrained nose initially but gradually showed blackberries and later black cherries along with hints of savory herbs. Smooth tannins but not very concentrated or long. Drinking well right now. Doubt that it will improve further but also does not appear to be fading yet.

Deep garnet color. Expressive nose of blackberries and cloves. Still is quite young but nevertheless an absolute pleasure to drink. High alcohol content of 15% is well concealed by the fresh fruit.

This is a good wine - easily recognizable as CDP by the bright band of red-fruit sweetness, which was lovely. The wine was decanted 3 hours and was at its best about 2 hours in. Later in the evening, the wine began to tighten up and have a more rustic feel to it, with some tough tannin and black fruit and earthy components taking center stage. It was still really good though.

This was much better than the last bottle we opened 3+ years ago, which was super closed. As other tasters have reported, this is now in notably better shape and revealing much more of the CdP experience. The nose initially showcases bright strawberry fruit complicated by lavender, violets, and a touch of roasted game. A bit astringent in the mouth at first, which directed us to decanting. It promptly went into a shell only to re-emerge after 2-3 hours, this time revealing a more evolved and complex and darker nose of blueberry, plum, and anise melded with the same lavender and violet notes. At this point the wine settled down in the mouth, yielding a much more suave and silky textured package carrying an assortment of red and dark fruits, licorice, chocolate, and herbs. Medium-bodied, but fairly rich and concentrated, with a long satisfying finish. A bit of heat was noticeable and stubbornly persistent throughout the evening, which prevented a higher score.

PNP and followed over several hours. Raspberry liqueur covered red and black cherries, sweet tobacco and fall herbs with hints of milk chocolate, lilac and chalkboard eraser in the nose. Blueberry compote, raspberry truffle, cold strong over steeped tea, iron filings and dry leaves with Holiday spices and freshly dried cement in the mouth. Full body with OK acid, still firm tannin and noticeably high alcohol.
Good if not great, a little out of balance and as the fruit and acid fade the alcohol and tannin will just take over, so I would say drink up.

Decanted 3 hrs. Served in a Riedel BUrg Stem, and I wonder if it was the best stemware choice. I really liked the nose, some exotic xmas spices and dark plums. While a very good CDP - I did find a touch of heat on the finish. I think this was better 5 years ago. Still, fun wine.
93-94 pts

Last of 6 bottles. Needed 30 minutes after opening to settle down.
Dark red color with a clear meniscus. On nose, ripe red fruit - raspberry, sweet cherry and strawberry with baking spice and touch of tobacco. On palate, similar flavor profile plus raspberry liquor and sweet cherry. At first alcohol was too much on palate (heat on finish) but after 30 minutes it calmed down. I loved this (94+/-) in it's youth but I need to drink my CDPs younger. 91+/-

Didn't note color. Great nose - raspberry, bright cherry, glycerin and lavender. On palate, cranberry, black tea, tart cherry and raspberry. Fruit not as sweet as prior bottle tasted in 2/2019. Full body, medium tannins/acidity and long finish. Much more enjoyable and what I would expect from this producer. 92-93 range.

Reminds me of the fabulous 1998 today but this was the first bottle of 2009 I really enjoyed. Many bottles improve with age but are show hints of the future. I’ve never followed a wine with such an abrupt transition to drink-ability as the 2009 Charvin. My previous bottle was a little over a year ago and it was not flawed but still undrinkable as the medicinal component dominated and hid the fruit. Today, I describe it as a medicinal backbone holding together red fruit, spices and a bare hint of peppercorn. Integrating nicely and now supremely drinkable with real promise for further improvement.

A friend had this recently and said it was time to drink up so I thought I'd try.
Dark red/black in the glass. Very fragrant nose with very ripe (raspberry pie, liquor like) red fruit on the nose & palate. Palate was more restrained with sweet raspberry, raspberry pie & touch of brown sugar on palate. Medium+ body, medium acids and medium tannins - the good structure keeps this together. Was surprised at how ripe the fruit was with this producer but that must be the vintage talking (or not stored properly before I bought in January 2012). Nice wine but the fruit was too "sweet" for my tastes. 90+/-
Will drink remaining bottles in next 2-3 years.

Tasted vis-a-vis the 2013, this is certainly a much more forward wine; sweet, spiced with garrigue, very well balanced for the warm vintage, Grenache speaks loudly here. Still young, will benefit from more cellar time. 92+ point.

My first C9dP from Charvin, bought a few vintages based on CT scores, in this case a good call . Black currant, pencil shaving, blackberries, fig, purple cherry, medium to full body, light tannins, will improve with some more years in the cellar, bit dry but long lasting finish.

Strawberry and candied cherry on the nose. On the palate, raspberry, candied cherry, and strawberry, with notes of anise and earth; light tannins show on the medium to long finish, with good acidity. This is more elegant than powerful. It's a good value at a little over $50.

Dark and opaque, a touch of brown at the edge. Pronounced sweet plum, black raspberry nose, hint of prunes. Dark berry flavors with some licorice, moderately tannic, a bit more than I like. Long aftertaste, but the tannin became much more evident, and the fruit started to fade. It might soften a bit more but could also end up losing more of its fruit. I'd tend to drink over the next 1-2 years. Ric

Full ruby color without fading. A combination of the typical Charvin bright raspberry with lower pitched, blacker fruit and an unusual amount of licorice and bitter chocolate. Round, substantial tannins. This seemed more restrained and backward than a bottle last year. Delicious but more structured, chewy, and savory than many bottles from this producer. I'm not complaining, mind you-wonderful, entirely impressive Chateauneuf, just more cerebral and less immediately seductive than wines like the 2001 or 2005, for example.

Second Sunday Group: 2009 Châteauneuf-du-Pape (R&D's): Double blind. An aroma of nail polish remover covers dark fruit that lingers underneath. The ethyl acetate follows through on the palate, highly acidic too; more acrid the longer it sits.

Agreed with other tasters that something's just not quite right here. Upon opening the nose was non-existent, with little more than acidity and tannin in the mouth. In short, it seemed closed, but also somewhat thin in the middle. We let it sit in the decanter indefinitely, with signs of sweet raspberry and spice emerging at the 5-hour mark (though still relatively unyielding). It was at its best at around 14 hours (early next morning), with pure, bright raspberry fruit on the nose followed by red fruit, licorice, and spice in the mouth and a less harsh finish - it was never a big, concentrated wine, but it certainly gained weight over night, showing some added complexity, but then become somewhat simplified as time went on. Not sure what to expect here; I'll hold remaining bottle 2-3 years and track carefully other tasters' experiences.

Ruby about 90% of the way to the edge. Gorgeous weight and feel. Not only the trademark Charvin raspberry fruit, but more tobacco, brown spice, and a lilting citrus note. Excellent acidity, some tannins remain but not intrusive at all. I loved this bottle, which had to be one of the most complete, satisfying, and balanced Chateauneufs I've had in quite some time. Drinking superbly now.

DTC Chateauneuf du Pape (@ SS): Beautiful bouquet with fresh red berry fruits and good garrigue. The dark brooding side of this wine is more or less gone. Now it is an exquisite and quite adorable effort. Dark, mature and just lovely Grenache fruit is accompanied by a herbal infusion, orange zest, wet saddle leather, Asian spice (what else to expect?) and last but not least a whiff of kirsch liqueur. The palate is perfectly integrated, especially the tannins. There is still a lot of structure, but also a possibility to cellar for a pretty long time. Overall impression is still very positive. A lovely wine!

Good paring with BBQ ribs tonight. That said, I've pretty much moved on from this producer and most CDP in general. Only problem, I have 16 more btls from assorted vintages to get through. I got around the 15% Alc by chilling this down to the low mid 50s. Decanted for 2 hours and back into the btl. Tasty enough but a bit heavy for my palate. Others will love this much more than I.

Even, medium red. Raspberry aromas. Medium weight-light in Chateauneuf terms but this has picked up weight since last tasted 3 years ago. Attractive interplay of the ripe red fruit, black licorice, and tobacco leaf. Not overly sweet. Good acidity, slightly raspy texture with some tannin that still sticks out. I did not get any heat that a previous taster noted. More earthy and mineral as it goes. Very good and I would estimate about 2 or 3 years from peak drinking.
After being open for 2 nights and refrigerated, harsh and alcoholic.

A corked 88 Gruaud Larose made this a quick fill-in. The second bottle from a case. It was a bad second choice because this wine just needs a lot of time before drinking. Tasted out of the bottle, it was unpleasantly firm and alcoholic, but within a half hour this passes and the red cherry fruit fills it out. The it becomes a paradox, because I never truly get into the wine but it is improving markedly with every sip, so I keep coming back to it and then it's gone. Not in a rush to open any of the other 10, but will open 4-6 hours in advance the next time I do. A very clean and straightforward wine, one liked by my guests more than me. My half-hearted enthusiasm for it is definitely driven by my aversion to obvious heat in wines, which this definitely toys with.

Drank over two nights with lots of air time in the glass....hours.
This wine is a bit of a conundrum to me. On the nose you get big dark fruit and some charcoal with leather notes. In the body you get more dark fruit but some lead, some crushed brick and game meats as nuances. The finish carries for minutes...literally minutes after swallowing you still have an alum kind of dryness I can only equate to eating pomegranate arils. That lingering bitterness that dries the mouth amid red juice with perhaps just a bit of blood, like you but your tongue with the arils.
So much going on with this wine; it could deserve a higher score but I found it a cacophony of flavors rather than a symphony. Perhaps with time.

Decanted a good 6 hrs. I knew this would be leaning towards a riper version of this CdP, but I was surprised at how much muscle and tannin it showed. Dark red fruits and spice played of a slightly saline (or bloody) quality, a bit of brick dust and again some pretty good tannins on the finish. A little more acidity and I might been thinking Aglianico if served blind. Should hold for many years.

A mid-winter visit to Châteauneuf-du-Pape; 2/5/2015-2/7/2015 (Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Southern Rhône, France): Laurent popped and poured a half bottle and asked us to guess the wine. (This was before the prior wine was revealed as 2007 CDP.) My guess was that this had to be younger than the prior wine, maybe 2009 or 2010. On a roll! Super peppery but with a bit more ripe, soy aspect than the 2007. That could be due to aeration (Laurent had slow ox'ed the 2007, and this was just popped), but the 2009's are awfully ripe.

Complex and at first rather dark and massive, the 2009 Charvin is full of rich Grenache fruit, kirsch, dark chocolate and awhiff of caramel. After some air it gets cleaner and a tine of red fruit emerges. There is nothing of the barnyard tone experienced in previous bottles. The palate adds nicely to the overall experience with both structure and texture. There is a need for further cellaring and seven days in the fridge under Argon gas seal made wonders to the wine. Tannins are certainly visible and promise a lot for the future but with a proper decant, the wine is lovely today too. Integration will improve with time, I am sure. Be sure to give it at least a couple of hours of air if drinking anytime soon or why not an overnight decant in the fridge?

Dark, a bit brooding but after some time in the glass this effort turns into an exquisite and quite adorable effort. Dark, mature and close to perfect Grenache fruit accompanied by a subtle herbal infusion, orange flowers, wet saddle leather and of course the classical kirsch liqueur. The palate is nicely integrated, but tannins are a bit unintegrated and speak up pretty loudly. Certainly a lot of structure, but also a promise of future greatness and integration. Overall impression is very positive. This is a super nice wine!

Complex, dark and massive, the 2009 Charvin displays the typical rich Grenache fruit as well as massive kirsch and cacao adjoined by a soft tone of caramel. After some air this particular bottle displays subtle but still visible barnyard tones - brett in a more pleasurable disguise... The palate follows through nicely and provides structure and texture. There is a need for further cellaring, but the experience is certainly lovely tonight too. Tannins are certainly visible and promise a lot for the future.

Medium color with lighter edge. Fairly subdued nose. Elegant weight, pretty red fruit, good core of acidity. Surprisingly light for a 2009, even accounting for the Charvin style, and honestly, lacking much interest or palate presence at this point. I should say, however, that I tasted it right out of the bottle after it was opened, and it was a little cool at the time too. Perhaps these were not the fairest conditions in which to judge the wine.

Closed, hard to taste in this state. If you own it, hold for at least a year or two. Nose is very pure raspberry liqueur, but on the palate showing a metallic edge, very closed and tough as nails. I would guess that this is a 92pt wine, but if you drink it today, maybe 86...
Another Blind Sunday in the Sunroom (Chez S1): Of the three CdPs on the day this one was the most disjointed at this time. The alcohol is a little more prominent with brighter red fruits, including a little red plum skin tannin structure. A little smoke and sharp glycerine with only a hint of herb. With time this could be a knockout but now isn't the right time.

92-93+ pts

In the mood for a big wine with grilled chops tonight. Opened about 2 hrs ahead of drinking & poured al ittle in the glass. Served around 58 degrees. In a word delicious. Balanced, lovely red fruit and spice. Carrys its weight well with good acidity and lift. Nose is clean and floral but somewhat reserved. Some youthfull tanins. Happy to own it. 3 more for 3-5yrs hence. 15% alc but Charvin pulls it off pefectly. No sense of oakiness what so ever.

Very exotic and intense nose. Reminiscent of great Burgundy but with richer more spicy characteristics. On the palate very smooth and rich with great fruit. Lots of complexity and very fine cut to the flavor profile. Probably the best 2009 I have had so far.

Popped, consumed over four nights. Firmly tannic and not really in the mood to play right now, but on the fourth night the tannin finally settled and it started to reveal some nuances. Some elegance and nice acidity. I sense some definite upside here. Based on this bottle, I do not believe this is an early drinker, but with time, will likely be a classic Charvin CdP.

Splash decanted and consumed over a few hours. Moderately expressive nose of ripe cherries, licorice, raspberries and spice box. Taught, high acidity palate, with sweet red fruits and a little sandalwood poking though. Finish was a little austere and harsh from the acidity but adds a little tar and spice. Higher toned with more acidity and less tannins than the '09 VT. This was showing less, but future looks good for this as it opens up. 90 now but 93+ future.

Completely closed down tonight. This is rather strange since most wines from this appellation drinks well for a number of years after bottling before (maybe) entering a "tunnelish" state. The 2009 Charvin, though, was nothing but dark, tannic and brooding tonight. Let's see what happens on day 2. (Day 2 after 24 hours of aeration, the wine is more open and displays a lot of everything including a lovely acidity and abundant dark red fruits. This is a fully packed masculine "monster" which needs several years to calm down. One concern after reading a lot of blog posts on this wine is that this bottle was flawed. Day 4: After sealing the wine with Argon gas and putting it in the fridge for a few days, it really sings tonight! The nose is so fully packed by garrigue, sage, thyme and lavender I am totally stunned. There is also a large chunk of Asian spice box. Simply adorable. 94+ tonight.)

2 hour slow o, served just above cellar temp. Red color, fairly translucent. Nose at first very much red fruit, herbs, and kirsch, then closes down to a bit of reduction, toast, and mushrooms. On the palate, some pure fruit quickly washed over by oak. Good acidity, but not good balance at this point with this bottle. Firm grip on the ample dark earthy tannin. Finish is long and creamy but obscured by said tannin and oak. Needs time. Will throw the other 2/3 of the bottle in the fridge overnight.
day 2:
Reduction has blown off, and nose shows a bit of confection. Palate is still rather tough to make out, not a great balance of tannin and acidity. The finish, still creamy, shows some of the red fruit hidden underneath, but seems too roasted and a touch sour. In a strange style, not sure if I am a fan. Would have to hold for a while to get a handle on it, uncertain of the potential.
6 hours later, does get slightly better with more time, but really tough to get a handle on. Finish is far better at this point, more pure fruit.
15%.

Super elegant. Loads of kirsch and cherry with some lavender. Dense tannin, but fine grained and not angular finishing sweet and silky. A more elegant red-fruited version of the Clos des Papes. Again remindful of Corton or a big Pommard.

Lost my notes again! On nose, black cherry, raspberry - some garrigue with air time. On palate, medium body with silky mouthfeel. Bright fruit - cherry / black cherry / raspberry / glycerin leading to a long elegant finish. Excellent wine and went great with grilled steaks. Drinking great now (1 hour decant). 93+

A fine nose that suggests plummy fruit and a hot hillside.
On the palate the fruit is muted but there are great notes of garrigue that are interesting and long on the finish.
This really settles well and improves over several hours. It has depth, layers, dark beauty, fine tannins and lots to give.
Ace.

There was an odor of turpentine (probably VA) plus something else I could not identify but was odd. Both masked dark fruits and blueberry, with allspice accents. The body felt heavy and ponderous. Something was not quite right.

Taught and young, with a nice fine tannic grip. A little reserved on the nose but nice spicy fruit and clean red fruit. Fresh palate. Nice sandalwood note on the finish. Really nice, but could use a few more yours. Just a hint of heat showing the vintage.

Quite restrained and elegant considering appellation and year. All balanced and fresh still. Starts off with a bit of VA and funk but blows off with air. Would decant and drink for best results. Don't see this having a long life but my experience with these wines is limited.

Ruby about 90% of the way to the edge. Gorgeous weight and feel. Not only the trademark Charvin raspberry fruit, but more tobacco, brown spice, and a lilting citrus note. Drinking superbly now.

DTC Chateauneuf du Pape (@ SS): Beautiful bouquet with fresh red berry fruits and good garrigue. On the palate red berries like raspberries, some dark berries as well, licorice, good acidity and round, but firm tannin. Overall a full bodied wine with still primary dark fruits, a little bit green herbs and with plenty of future. 92+
