Conterno is fantastic. Stern and closed on open. Very floral after an hour decant. Perfect foil to the truffle. Fantastic structure. Great acid. Very tannic and powerful but great with the dinner. Love it at this stage versus too old. Still sipping, and it’s a punch in the face. In a good way. For $36.80 at Garagiste, world class.

Finally this wine is starting to taste like I expect a Barolo to taste. I have been fairly frustrated with this wine as it has mostly been too tannic or too acid for my taste. Now however it is starting to improve. When first opened it was very acidic. But after decanting and aeration it took on a deeper flavor profile. The acidity dissipated and the underlying fruit balanced with tannin and the classic Barolo "zing" were all present. However I am getting to old to wait 15 years for a wine. Actually since I bought this case in 2012, I have only waited 10 years but even that is a lot. the color was deep red with no signs of oxidation. There was a mild fruity bouquet.

Dinner at Canard (Canard, Portland OR): The nose was pretty open and very expressive with bright red cherries, raspberries, tar, coconut, juniper berries, strawberries, licorice, roasted herbs, violets, rose petals, and wild spices. There is excellent balance with good depth while the oak note does come through a bit when poured. The Full bodied feel is a little rough around the edges, but with good depth and length along with tart, high acidity and silky, high tannins. This probably could've benefitted from a decant, but c'est la vie. It still showed really well and though it has a good life ahead of it, there's no reason not to open one now.

Charity wine dinner; Rosé, Champagne, old/new Barolo, Sauternes, Port (Samish Hill, Bellingham, WA): I wanted to contrast a mature versus young nebbiolo, so I poured this after the '67 Calissano. Decanted a few hours. Lush but fresh, abundant fine tannins, this was really enjoyable. I'd previously found some of their single vineyard wines extravagant, but this was refined. The bottle was easily drained long before night's end.

Tasting Barolo Summer 2021: All the wines in this tasting were underwhelming. This bottle was better than the 2008 and 2007 from Aldo but far from a great Barolo. That said, it is ready to go.

Fine and elegant, with enough gentle black fruit and florals to make it very attractive. Tannins are tea-like. Just got better in the glass, and even the following day.

Slow oxd for probably 6 hours. This is extremely elegant and refined. Not a blockbuster but all that you could ever expect from an entry level wine from any producer. Great fruit and the typical “tar and roses” but such a high level of refinement. Even better the next day.

Stood up for 2-3 weeks and decanted off its sediment. Light-medium ruby with slight bricking; medium-intensity aromatics with red cherry, slight cinnamon spice; palate is light-medium bodied with tannins still present but not distracting, high balanced acidity, high alcohol (14.5%) but not overly noticeable; finish is medium length. A lovely entry-level barolo, not overly modernist but also lacking a bit of character from some traditionalists, and seems ready to drink now but with at least 5 years ahead of it. This does seem like a Monforte in its density and weight. 89

Really nice wine upon opening. Full bodied, but not overwhelming, tangy acidity to go with nice fruit. Nice density, texture, and balance. After two hours it became less interesting. Best to drink upon opening in this instance and not sure further age will help. 2 days later on Coravin, the wine was even better ... shows you what I know.

This Barolo has put on a lot of weight since I first tried it around 4 years ago, when it was too light and thin for my tastes. It must be a trick of the memory, for it almost seems a darker red now as well. Almost immediately it was very aromatic with dark fruits to the fore, but it took a minimum one hour in the decanter to start to drink nicely. After that, it just got better and better, showing off a lovely dark fruit structure, still ample tannins and medium acidity. On the finish, there was a something of a wall of bitterness that just hit at the end. The next day, it was better still, and some aromas of tar and roses were starting to come through. This was a beautiful Barolo, very elegant and polished, and I wish I had more to see how it would develop over the coming years. I'm convinced it would make its 20th birthday in prime form and hold good for years after.

Brief note: dark ruby. Nose of red and dark cherry, plum. Beautiful red to dark red fruit, licorice, and mint. Good balance, maybe a bit fruit forward but with all the structure to age much longer. Can drink now or age another 10-15.

Decanted for an hour. Nose was shy at first but opened up over the next 2 hours. Elegant and expressive notes of plum, red cherries and tar. Not a fully bodied wine, but good balance and structure, with a medium plus finish. Expressed so very, very young, even for a wine of this vintage - still plenty of fresh fruit and tannins. Very nice, though I preferred the 2004 from a couple of months earlier.

Really young. Very grippy tannins that are more in the chewy vein. This was a few oz pour from Park Ave wines in Portland. Darker unripe fruits. An almost hint that there could be shoe leather in the future. Served at cellar temp and imagine it will become more expressive as it opens up and warms up. At the end there’s a touch of cracked black pepper. Lots of interesting pieces, but not pulled together yet. Maybe with some time.

From a coravin glass pour at Park Avenue Wines (Portland, OR). The nose on this was a bit shut down, but on the palate it was open and ready for business. Some red cherry fruit, with tar and earthy flavors - very nice.

Playfull, nuanced, exquisite. Burgundy colored, youthful and fresh. A deft touch of wood adds sophistication but only highlights the fruit. Smooth and elegant, touch of cola, burgundy-like aromatics followed by a refined yet concentrated fruit -- wild berries and dark cherry, followed by baked cranberries, mint, oak. Slightly rustic long finish pleasantly contrasts the polished entry. The fruit showcases all of the nuanced facets of the ripe nebbiolo without any hint of oxidation or over the top acidity. Delicious now.

Used in Mature Barolo Tasting. This was the surprise wine of the evening, as it beat its big brother, Romirasco, hands down. This base wine from Conterno was lively with bright cherry, at first. With time in the glass the cherry toned down and good spice showed. This is a lighter Barolo, by comparison, but somehow sustained its flavor better throughout the evening compared to the Romirasco. Tannin was silky smooth.

Last time I opened one of these bottles I let it decant for too long (about 3 hours). This time I began sipping after about 30 minutes - it was tight. Sweet spot occurred about 75 minutes into the decant - the strawberry/secondary cherry aromas persisted as previously tasted (smelled), but this time the wine integrated better than I had previously experienced. Perhaps the speck and wonderful unpasteurized oma (from Vermont) enhanced my drinking experience. Either way, I enjoyed this bottle a touch more than previously.

Alc: 14.5%; Mid ruby Perfumed bouquet displaying dried roses, elements of spice and tar. A delicate wine with lovely complexity this is a textbook Barolo with its tar, roses and umami nuances. More medium-bodied than light, there is flesh to the fruit core, density to the fine, yet robust tannins and a long farewell. The mid-palate offers Xmas spices, Bing cherry and dried rose petals. Not super complex it is utterly charming!

Terrific bouquet of strawberry, and a secondary cherry nose with a slight floral note. I didn't get the tar (is that good or bad?) that others have referenced, typical of Barolo. Very nice integration of tannins, fruit, and acidity; excellent pairing with osso buco. No considerable improvement from 2 years ago (not any worse either); remains to be seen to what extent this improves with more time in the cellar (don't think it will get worse any time soon).

Tar/gasoline and wet leaves on the nose at first, fading to cedar/roses toward the middle of the glass. Wet leaves and cedar continues on the palate with a little fruit, 4/5 tannins and 3/5 acidity, and a little candy apple nose and palate for the finish.

Not much to say other than textbook quality barolo from an obvious big name producer. Tar roses leather tart cherry. Lip smacking tannins. All that good stuff. Sure it's too young but not by a whole lot. I actually left one glass in the bottle on accident and came back four days later and it hadn't skipped a beat.

This is difficult because I'm not smart enough to necessarily know but the last two bottles are different. By different I mean the wine seems backward compared to when I had it over the last 2 years. I read some say wines are in 'dumb' phases, well maybe that is what happened here. Nose was muted, no real structure or flavor profile. Just seemed there was allot of iron, meat and blood which previously was in balance with the fruit but not so know. I'm scoring 89 because that is what it is today but it is very possible in another year or two it will retrieve its previous status.

Sorry, I know I seem to be all over on this wine. Maybe it is bottle inconsistency but last night this was a splendid Barolo reflective of vintage and place. Classic style with rounded edges, dark chocolate, spice and mint notes. Balance was great and sustained throughout the palate. Last night it was 92 while others not so good. There is still time in this bottle but extremely pleasurable now

Needs about 30 minutes to breathe. Previous notes apply. Still shut down slightly from previous bottles but remains strong, elegant expressing considerable terroir initially fading to cherry and leather notes. I think it may need to rest another 2-3 years before really expressing itself.

A delicate cherry high and very aromatic off the cork pull. Soft with good fruit character on the mid palate and then lots of grippy power on the back. Good stuff, works at $70 or so. Very high toned orange and floral notes out of a zalto.

Nose: Leather, cherries, deep and fruit driven, wild strawberries, Taste: Strawberries and wild strawberries also in the taste, relative high on acidity, clear but soft tannins, some earth, alcohol, spices, minerals and prunes. Length: short to medium. Summary: I personally think Aldo Conterno's wines hold a very high lowest level, and I did expect more from this wine. The wine is not fantastic, but has potential and should stay in the cellar.

Decanted and poured, this wine gave an excellent showing with aromatics of red cherry, tar, earth and spice notes that were detailed and expressive. The wine does begin somewhat reserved and one dimensional. Airing gives the wine better overall balance and accessibility. Based on this showing, the wine gives the impression that it will benefit from an additional year or two of bottle age.

Light pale red color; Nice bright red cherry, floral notes of rose and a touch of orange peel-zest; medium body, juicy, high acidity with understated but ample tannins and an undercurrent of metalic mienrality; medium intensity and finish; solid Baorolo, on the leaner, brighter side, but needs time in the bottle, in the glass. Potential for 91+.

Still a favorite and in memorium. Previous notes apply. Obviously I like it better than others but sei la vie that is the beauty of individual differences. Medium color, transparent to the rim. Light body on the glass. Nose somewhat muted expressing its youth. Slight nail polish on the nose, menthol, mint. Expression of nail polish, dark chocolate, black fruit on the attack with a nice spice finish which lingered nicely with a chalky dry finish. Good tanninc structure but definitely youthful. Should improve greatly over the next 5-7 years.

This wine may still be a bit young. I felt that the tannins were still too prominent for a good Barolo and the flavors were "muddy." I recently had a 1995 Barolo from the same producer and the comparison between the two was clear == the 1995 wine would be at least a 95 in terms of balance of fruit and tanin and development in the glass. This 2006 is not there yet.

taste: very young with the tannins being very coarse right now. Medium/full bodied with medium/high acidity that is fairly piercing along with tones of roasted herbs, dark red cherries, and tar
overall: This is a very young barolo. The tannins are big and chewy with big acidity as well. While not the most complex barolo, this should develop nicely

This wine has an elegant strawberry nose, all of the tartness and acidity I love in Piemontese wines, and a delightfully smooth finish. This should only improve with age.

Nose: Leather, cherries, deep and fruit driven, wild strawberries,
Taste: Strawberries and wild strawberries also in the taste, relative high on acidity, clear but soft tannins, some earth, alcohol, spices, minerals and prunes.
Length: short to medium.
Summary: I personally think Aldo Conterno's wines hold a very high lowest level, and I did expect more from this wine. The wine is not fantastic, but has potential and should stay in the cellar.

Way too young. Fun to drink, but not offering everything it should. Really tight and unyielding. Got better with air. Needs patience.

K&L Grand ItalianTasting (K&L Wine Merchants, Redwood City, California): More generous nose and more depth than the '05 and '07 right now with raspberries/strawberries notes and a little bit of funk. Still a little bit hot. Tannic.

Bright red fruity nose, especially cherries with oak and smoke. Big, bold fruity palate with strong tannins and oaky finish. Matched the lamb very well.
Paired with the 4th course lamb option of Colorado Rack of Lamb with artichoke purée, black olive and lamb jus.

Maverick Wine Co.'s Grand Tour 2011 (OneSixtyBlue, Chicago IL): nose: well balanced but restrained nose of roasted herbs, dark red cherries, black licorice, and tar
taste: very young with the tannins being very coarse right now. Medium/full bodied with medium/high acidity that is fairly piercing along with tones of roasted herbs, dark red cherries, and tar
overall: This is a very young barolo. The tannins are big and chewy with big acidity as well. While not the most complex barolo, this should develop nicely
