  • 2018 Castello Romitorio Romitoro Toscana IGT

This wine has been and continues to be an enigma. On very first blush and today it has so much working for it. Rimmerman loved it (although he loves everything he sells) the idea of Syrah and Petit Verdot from Tuscany. I love the label too. I opened a bottle a few years ago - young - and was under impressed. The romance (as well as the Syrah) provided a hope and a reality. Well that reality is a tight, shy, hidden, forgetting wine. Well I opened a bottle tonight with again great hope. I must say I’d love to see or report how this bottle matured, evolved into a master stroke. Well it did. Kind of. Actually not really. Maybe it might, if you have a few to several more years. There is promise, yet…What was revealed was an inky concentrated red wine informed by its Syrah roots. It’s revealing a bit more - for a hearty meal (read meat, concentrated red sauce) it will impress - sort of. For most of everything else it is a dominant overwhelming expression. With little character. Think any metal band. Lacking nuance or character. Right now, if you must, any Wednesday night to have a serviceable red wine. The Syrah is asking, no insisting, a look in 3-5 years.

A lovely bottle of wine. On open a bit tight, a bit shy. The nose, the same expression. By 20 minutes things are starting to happen. First the Merlot is saying “Hi!” I can say this bottle can use a few more years to really mature, really express. Right now, if you want to, the core of the bottle reveals. I taste the green spring like Cabernet franc complementing not obscuring the Merlot. So far just working so well. The nose begins to reveal the complexities to come. In the glass there is a pure deep burgundy hinting at what might come, actually that does come. Through this tasting I sense a lot to come hidden by the bottle’s youth. So far, very solid, very sure of itself. Like that kid showing talent in a little league game. I think it’s too young to establish an absolute identity. I love what this bottle is trying to say. Not quite sure but like a great Garcia solo, hinting at something, provoking thought leading to “what might this be?” The deep burgundy in the glass up to the edges points, to me, a few years left in this bottle. I don’t think , for an oenophile, this bottle is full of challenge certainly not dissatisfaction. I’ll wait a few years for the next one but right now damn good.

This wine impresses me. While is is not subtle nor sensitive it is a lovely gamey gamay from one of my favorite parts of France. Bottles like this are more journeyman than high brow. I wonder if I were having it in a bistro in Tours or Angier with roasted chicken or hanger steak what my reaction would be. Well I think the balanced between fruit/tannin/acidity as well as the raspy, edgy palate (granular tannins) with slight chill would not only compliment the dinner but present the terroir of the Loire Valley in a positive light. Just right. It ties together place and food. It’s hard to describe the taste, but the character, the experience of the wine supersedes specific tasting notes . I couldn’t immediately identify gamay but after time that became evident. Wines like these illustrate how varied wine can be. This wine, to me, illustrates a Saturday night in October as the weather is changing with something thrown together on the stove. I had this pomedoro, polpettini, pappardelle parmigiano, parsley. It worked. Well. If you’re looking for numbers, not on this bottle, if your looking experience, you won’t be disappointed. I think 5 years max but drinking quite well now.
