  • 2012 Domaine Harmand-Geoffroy Gevrey-Chambertin en Jouise

First off: ratings and scores are bullshit so no "score" on this one. Are we all drinking the same wine? Give me a break. I've been in retail and wholesale wine for 20 years and I can assure you the same wine from the same vintage transported in the same way can and will taste different on different days. Biodynamic calendar in play? Who knows? I've had a bag of 10 wines that tasted great on a leaf day. All I know is this stuff is alive and it tastes different from day to day.

"There are no great wines, only great bottles of wines."

On to the wine. This is why we pay for going up the hill in the Cote d'Or. More sunshine, better drainage. Unfortunately the prices for Gevrey-Chambertin are out of whack (ye old supply and demand or is it greed and catch up?).

2012 was a difficult vintage but I guess all's well that ends well. My bottle was ready to drink upon opening. Pronounced aromatics of dark red fruit with earthy notes. Gevrey ripeness is at play here. Very rare to find this one the lesser wines down the hill; however, the fruit is brighter on the palate (acidity is alive and kicking. I would not decant), but the bing cherry lingers on and on. Ah Burgundy, who do I love thee? Let count the ways.

Neal Rosenthal (importer) rarely lets me down, it's always just a matter of price. I don't know this producer, you can look it up on Neal's exhausting website Madrose.com

Another lovely 2018. I prefer them fresh but I'm sure I this was a little premature in opening this (better than over the hill). Vibrant crunchy red fruit. Surprisingly, this did not hold up over night (after using gas and keeping it at 60).

    Way over the hill. Sad.
