I've always thought Weinert's wines were underrated and underpriced and at £6.99, I think this is good value. A blend of Malbec and other Bordeaux varietals, it tastes like it's aged in old oak for some time - a refreshing change to the large amount of new oak being used in already very ripe new world wines. It makes me think of mature and dried berry fruits and leather, which is a good thing I hasten to add, and structurally it's all there. I'd drink this over the next 12 months if I had any more.

Straw colour. Aromas build from burnt caramel to honey to grapefruit and pineapple. The palate is luscious but not cloying. Botrytis is evident in the orange marmalade character that comes across. Honey and citrus fruit flavours dominate and the acidity is well balanced. I enjoyed this with some raspberries last night but I can see it going equally well with blue cheese as it has a spiced edge and a slight savoury character that balances the sweetness. Delicious and relatively inexpensive for a half bottle from such a great vintage. I might just go and pour myself another glass while I work...

I've always been a fan of Casa Silva's wine following the recommendation of a chilean oenologist contact back in 2001. I've mainly had their Carmeneres, Shiraz and Cabs so was looking forward to this Petit Verdot, but I was left disappointed. Perhaps it was too young, perhaps I should have decanted it but I just thought it was a bit bland. None of the ripe juicy fruit of the Lolol Shiraz that I'd previously enjoyed or the creaminess of the Carmenere. Definitely a "could do better" on the report card, especially as it was over £12 a bottle!
