  • 2009 Château Capbern-Gasqueton

Just delicious uncomplicated Bordeaux very much in the mold of the rich 2009 vintage. Firm, masculine structure with plenty of fruit. Lovely. If all bottles of wine have the same QPR as this, the (wine) world would be a much better place!

Looking back on my last note in 2021 I said I would leave this alone in the hope it might improve. And so, 2.5 or so years later I decided to take the plunge. I suppose with ever so low expectations I could only be pleasantly surprised and so it proved. Popped the cork and inhaled the bottle rim. Nothing unpleasant, indeed it seems quite decent. Left the wine to breath in the bottle for an hour before dinner. And so to the first glass…gentle fruit, a bit of dustiness. First sip…I brace for the heat, the confected fruit etc etc…but what’s this? Fully resolved tannins, high but pleasant acidity, a mid weight palate of black fruits and oh! This has changed! Gone are all the unpleasant things I mentioned in my previous note and instead, standing before me I have a pleasant bottle of wine. It’s nothing spectacular, but now entirely drinkable. I personally thing Granacha should have a bit more weight than this wine currently has, but it now warrants a decent score and I’ll enjoy the remaining bottles I have over the next year or so.

  • 2015 Le Macchiole Bolgheri Rosso

Still drinking beautifully and if anything has gained a bit more weight. Lots of fruit both on the nose and palate and with air this settles down a bit and becomes a lovely drop of wine. Plenty of life ahead for this.
