  • 2008 Arkenstone Obsidian

Deep ruby red. This was quite the revelation! Last time I opened one of these (about 5 years ago) I remember it being in a very awkward phase, full of oak and very ripe fruit. At the time, I was uncertain whether the wine will ever come into balance and evolve into something as promising as the beautiful—albeit embryonic—elixir that I tasted at the winery so many years ago. Well, if this bottle is any indication, it sure has evolved into a beautiful Cabernet. There are aromas of cassis, licorice, iris and even a touch of leather and mint. There is ample fruit on the medium- to full-bodied palate, with dark fruit and earth cascading across the palate much more gently, underpinned by good acidity and much more gentle, though still present, tannins. Drinking very well now, but I see no reason to doubt that it will hold for a good decade. 14.5% ABV not noticeable. An excellent Obsidian! 94.

  • 2003 Château Calon-Ségur

Still deep in color, the 2003 Calon Segur gives off aromas of hard candy, smoke, cigar wrapper and herbs. In the mouth, there is lots of earth, black cherry and bittersweet chocolate, all of which is followed by a tsunami of tannin that is more typical of a barrel sample than of a near 20 year old claret. There is good length here, but the accompanying dryness is worrisome. Even the 1995 was more resolved at a similar time point in its evolution. I’d wait at least another 5 years before checking in again, all the while keeping my fingers crossed that the fruit holds up. 88+?

  • 2020 Morgen Long Chardonnay X Omni

Pale yellow with a clear rim. This outstanding Chardonnay is dominated by complex aromas of sea spray, white flowers, mandarin orange, gunflint and hints of lemongrass and ginger. Medium- to full-bodied, seamless on the palate and loaded with citrus fruits, minerals and chalky extract. Finishes impossibility long, with great cut and a whiplash of minerals that reverberates well after the wine is swallowed. Reminded me of a top-notch Meursault premier cru from Roulot. Simply phenomenal! 12.5% ABV. 96.
