Very light gold. Fine but restrained aroma - hint of lime? Straight to the point and direct. Exceptionally pure, blistering acidity yet balanced. Very long.
To me there are three things that set apart great German riesling. Fruit, purity, acidity (read: length) and balance. This has the last three in spades.
I've tasted it in pairs over the last year or two against a good number of top rated rieslings in the off-dry or kabinett bracket. By top rated I mean rated by a pro critic either the best or amongst the best in its peer group and vintage. This wine had clear blue water on them all. It is an absolute classic.
Oh, and I didn't say, it makes me smile spontaneously. Maybe a dozen wines have done that, ever.

Deep gold. 13.5% alcohol. The smell is glorious - honeyed melon and lychee - 96 points? Powerful flavours - charismatic. But it also has a taste a bit like the green bit of a melon, just inside the rind, that you eat then regret that you didn't stop sooner - mid 80s, perhaps high 80s?
Averaging across two widly different aspects like this is tough, so I plump for 90 points overall.
Tasted versus the Leitz 2003 Rudesheimer Kirchenpfad riesling auslese #05 04 - a pure but simple gently sweet desert auslese that I rate 93 points and which was somewhat more enjoyable overall.

Light to mid gold. Aroma of sulphur and apricot. Fruity, fat flavours. Dose of coarse acidity. This is passable but no more.
Tasted versus the Schmitges 2005 Erdener Treppchen Auslese* - a ca. 90-91 point wine with a similar profile. The Schmitges was better by a wide margin.
