  • 2018 Roses de Jeanne / Cédric Bouchard Champagne Millésimé Blanc de Noirs Les Ursules

Pale gold. Bouquet of red berries, strawberries and intense minerality, salty rocks, oyster shells. A bit of spice and toast as well. Medium bodies, great acidity and from the initial sip on down through the finish, this bottle was all about the minerality. The palate had some nice floral notes and fresh strawberry that you can get from a good PN-based BdN. The finish was honestly a bit odd at first, as the minerality absolutely steamrolled the other flavors. Initially it seemed a bit clipped, but as the bottle warmed up the finish took on more balance, and left you with a pleasantly lingering echo of the palate.

Decanted five hours prior to dinner. Light, translucent purple. Kaleidoscope of aromas in the bouquet, it simply exploded out of the glass. Violets, abundant spice, tart red fruit as well as darker fruits and berries. The oak was noticeable but well-integrated and added to the spices that flowed through and around all of the other aromas.
Medium-bodied, the wine is so overtly spicy yet lifted and elegant that you could have thought this came from Vosne. The wine carries its weight well, with medium+ tannins that are noticeable but integrated and balanced by high acidity. Crushed rose petals on the palate mixed with crunchy cranberries and pomegranates dusted with all that spice, all of which are delivered in layers. Swallowing leaves a long, savory finish dominated by the florals and spice. Not close to ready, but delicious now and showing its depth and potential.

Pale gold. A touch of reduction on the nose, along with ripe lemon, green apple, and noticeable oak and vanilla. Medium-bodied, first impression of the palate is the oaky characteristics. Good acidity, especially for a 2015, kept the wine crisp, and the wine finished with lemon and vanilla. This was a good wine, if not in my preferred style.
