WOTN. Served a bottle of this last to non-discriminating Chardonnay quaffers. They really liked it--enough that I had to open my second and last bottle. Had a leftover glass this evening and now understand the consumption. This is really nice chardonnay for the price. Lemon and lime on the nose with muted citrus balanced acidity on the palate. I should have taken better notes but have always appreciated Walter Hansel as a vintner, particularly given his pricing.

Had this in the cellar since 2012. Should have opened earlier. Medium purple, fading at the edges. Can't find any fruit on the nose or on the palate. Not unpleasant but not at all rich like other CDPs. Austere is the word that comes to mind. It did complement a pork shoulder better that would a heavily fruited wine. Drink up

Fair is fair. I rated the first bottle of this an 85, essentially panning it as unpleasant to drink. The second bottle I have to rank at slightly above the community average to make up for my prior disrespect, but also because this bottle deserves it. Extreme bottle variation is at play. Tonight’s wine is thinner than the first bottle, seemingly fading a bit. The nose is muted with some funk, leather, but minimal fruit. In the mouth it is like an aged Rhône with fruit fading, some acidity, but tannins resolved. The finish lingers a bit and the wine was a perfect complement to steak. I have one more bottle and will not wait long as I don’t see this improving with additional age.
