  • 1988 Mount Eden Vineyards Pinot Noir

from magnum, served with a traditional Thanksgiving meal.

No detailed notes, but this was still in great shape and was enjoyed by all who tried it. Not bad at all for 35 years old!

  • 2004 Loring Wine Company Chardonnay Rosella's Vineyard

Found this bottle in an in-home wine refrigerator that failed and was unplugged several years ago, so basically stored at room temp for a long time. The screw top did its job, though, as the wine showed little signs being almost 20 years old. Color is very light gold. It remains a weird wine though - little Chardonnay character, musty, maybe some ammonia, on the nose, some sweetness on the palate, but surprisingly, little heat from the 16% alcohol (although maybe that's showing as sweetness). To be clear, we probably won't finish the bottle but it makes me curious about an unlabeled bottle of Loring wine (based on the screw cap) we found alongside this one.

  • 1983 Ridge Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet

My daughter turns 40 today (that's when you know you're getting old 😁). To celebrate, we opened a couple of '83s last night.

This SCM is the declassified Monte Bello from '83. The color is still deep with no lightening at the edges. A beast in it's youth, the tannins are fully resolved now. There's not a lot of fruit remaining, but some plum and currant show through along with some pleasant cedary flavors. The finish is quite nice, silky smooth over the palate and long lasting.

I still have a few more bottles of this, including a 5 liter that should make it to her 50th!
