  • 2021 Fratelli Serio and Battista Borgogno Barbera d'Alba

Visual: deep garnet and slightly opaque but a clear meniscus
Nose: potting soil, fern, green pepper, blackberry, clove, black cherry
Taste: medium body with medium-plus acidity. Lovely tannins that coat the cheeks but not harsh. Sweet on the initial, migrates to umami, then switches to a sweet/sour at the end.
Food pairings: enjoyed with American beef summer sausage and Castelvetrano olives. This just screams “please serve me with olives!” I’d put this with a well-made pizza with vegetables!

  • 2019 Donne Fittipaldi Bolgheri Superiore

A lovely opaque deep garnet but clear meniscus soon reveals scents of potting soil, cherry, tobacco, blackberry, and Lily-of-the-Valley. The taste is fruity and full of tannins, lingering for a good while with thoughts do telicherry pepper on the back palate. This would go wonderfully with a Bolognese sauce with a pork/beef combination. The fruitiness cuts the acidity of the tomatoes and compliments the richness of the meat.

  • 2022 Malene Wines Rosé

Despite the mild malolactic fermentation at the bottom of my pour (light champagne-like bubbles casually gathering towards the stem), the light pink color is pleasing to the eye. Swirls reveal peony, zinna, rose, strawberry, and pink grapefruit with just a hint of Ranier cherry. The berry and grapefruit continue on the taste, with light washing of the palate that dissipates as quickly as it is swallowed. The higher acidity makes this a friendly compliment to anything shrimp, particularly a chilled shrimp cocktail as a summer appetizer with friends on the water.
