  • * Wine 4/4 (BDX spring tasting dinner). Opened 5 hours before serving (no decant).

Lovely aromas of nutmeg, damp earth, rhubarb and spices right from the start. A few hours in the wine fully unlocked revealing intriguing notes of toffee, caramel and game. Beautiful nose, very promising.

In the mouth - at peak with many years of prime drinking ahead of it. Medium bodied, soft velvety tannins, lovely red fruit and spices. Nice delicate sweetness on the finish, with slight tertiary port notes.

Just a lovely, well rounded and balanced effort. I still prefer the '86 which I had the pleasure of tasting just 8 weeks ago, but still I give this a very solid 91 points on the night. Drink now through 2032.

  • A sheer beauty! At this age, still vibrant and energetic. Dark colour, along with a hint of watery rim! Smells wonderful, pure black fruits. A very clean palate, offering you an exceptional, lengthy finish. Drink or keep it for up to ten years from now, and absolutely no rush!

  • Fill 10 mm into neck, good dark ruby, currants, cherry, pencil lead, cedar, fully integrated soft tannins, long finish, in a really nice place

  • Still good, another year or two on from last note. Nose up there, racy, exciting, damson and enveloping, but the bottle didn’t sing in the highest octave. Wine was perfectly creditable, but as mentioned previously I hope, rolling the dice always, on these fully resolved 35 yr old bottles, there will be slight variation. Durand extraction. No cork dustiness, just some minimal breaking issues. Don’t want to be a Debbie Downer - if this was in your last top 250/500 bottles, you’d certainly be happy. No need to hang on, and have another few years yet. Although an ‘82/90/96 it ain’t.

  • Gareth's Cru Bourgeois Dinner (Hawksmoor, Guildhall, London): Blackcurrant fruit, some red-toned fruit coming through too, touch of soy (in a good way), quite exotic, complex, some cigar box coming through. Medium bodied, dark fruit, tobacco, some smoky mineral, soft tannins - lovely mouthfeel in fact, fresh acidity, quite long too. Excellent, drinking well.
