Opened with friends for dinner alongside a 1999 Cos d'Estournel and a 2012 Alto Moncayo Garnacha. It was super tight immediately after opening and I was worried it wasn't going to taste well for dinner guests. Those fears were unwarranted as immediately after decanting the wine opened up beautifully. Although it's a new world wine, I didn't find it so fruit forward that it was in another league from the cos d'estournel. They complimented each other well although it was apparent that the tref probably isn't quite in drinking window while the cos was. The tannins where still very bold so I see room for improvement over the next 5 years. Having tasted this, I won't touch my 2011 tref reserve until 2021+

This was the reserve cab at the winery. It's obviously a bit young but for $100 it's decidedly less well integrated than other wines for the price. They are very proud of their all estate grapes but most of their estate is on the valley floor. Most of their valley floor wines probably have too high of yields. This wine seems to be missing intelligent blending of different blocks...at least for the price. I have heard this has some mountain fruit, but I'm not sure there is much variety in the areas because there is still lingering astringent flavors like menthol and eucalyptus that overpower the fruit. Tannins are strong - especially mid palette -- with some heat that lingers. This wine will be better with age, but 2010 was a challenging year and this is not a good wine for the price.
