Almost unpleasant, heavy cherry jam (overripe and not very well aged Merlot) with some tannin structure there but far from balancing the wine. Maybe transport heat damage or not well developed in the cellar, although technically seemed ok. We did not finish the bottle.

I found this lurking in the cellar - I had forgotten I had it. Looking closer, I sighed - Magrez, 2009, 14° - what had I been thinking when I bought it? On opening, I grimaced - the first sip was really awful, as expected, like cough mixture on steroids. I chose not to chuck it away and several hours later, tried it again. It wasn't a shrinking violet, this is not for the faint-hearted, but there is something of interest there - the attack is slightly cooler than expected and there is a really impressive, profound streak of pure blackcurrant coming midpalate. The downside is still the hot finish, but this tasted better than the Cantemerle 2010 opened to replace it. It could even be quite good in another four years. The score is in anticipation of that, but it may deserve more.

Nose of red fruit, jam, and some mud and earth, and a faint hint of spices. Palate is a bit heavy with big cabernet sauvignon with a a mouthful of juicy tannin and acid. The second last layer feels quite rounded before the chalky tannin hits you. Like this wine. Didn’t decant.

Beau vin, aucune trace d'évolution. Attendre pour plus de complexité.
