Initially on opening it had a funky color and smell; “caterpillar butt” was something that was thrown out at one point. But as it opens up (two or three hours in the bottle) it is getting more reasonable. Nose has some funk, canned vegetables, bitter herbs, crushed stone. Palate is smoky, hot rocks, herbs de Provence, something bitter on the finish. Hard for me to say whether this is off or just needs air.

Funky nose, aromas of animal farm, lavender. Very high on acidity, marks of mint, underbrush. Very complex, exciting wine. Less obvious compared to the 2001 Les Cailloux, more interesting. With Rune in Bagnols.

Light red color, surprisingly light for a Neuf. Funky, wild nose, animals all over the place. Lean, light to medium bodied. Lavender, herbs, even some green notes. Tertiary, the fruit is in the background, dusty but light red in color. Old school Châteauneuf, reminds me of Beaucastel pre 1995. Interesting, complex wine, unique. Love it.

The nose is full of sweet berries, florals, and a hint of manure. Clearly mature, sweet, silky, lavender, berries, and leather, moderate length. Having drunk about 2 cases of this vintage over the years, I would regrettably say this wine is on the downslope. Lovely still, but drink up.

One of us thought this was great but I thought it a little over the hill. Still tannic and some classic cdp flavours, but also some astringency and maybetending a little too far to vinegar.

(Bois de Boursan Chateauneuf-du-Pape) I love '01 in the Southern Rhone as it was a perfect vintage. Not to hot and the wines have a cooling minerality plus wonderful bright acids. This wine had one thing the 2005 did not have. Amazing freshness. Just sick, twisted amazing freshness combined with cooling minerality, lovely kirsch and cherry fruit that was stunningly pure and a long finish. Just so damn balanced, fresh and pure.
