Syrah - N Rhone vs SA with the N London Crew; 2/29/2024-3/1/2024 (La Cabotte): My wine. This is the good schist. Mouth watering acidity but all in balance. Real minerality there - not in the "ooh isn't this a flinty chablis" sense, more in the actually crushed rocks in the glass - you get more than a sense of place. Blind I would have called this the most cornas-y of the wines. My WOTN and the table's joint WOTN with the 09 Faurie.

Syrah - Rhone vs SA - Cabotte with the NLWTS (Cabotte): “A whiff of the gates of hell” was the quote of the evening. Really pure lack fruit; super peppery. Medium bodied palate; bit of sweetness, and something herbal. Doesn’t quite live up to the nose but still lovely and balanced. Very polite; anything but exuberant.

Syrah at Cabotte with the TWS North London Group (Cabotte, London): Wonderful nose, somebody said "gates of hell" but in positive way. It's deliciously fresh and spicy, and like the Faurie before it has this lightness of touch which is brilliant. It's stoney, dark-fruited and spiced, completely on point, with all elements working together to create a wine of fabulous composure and balance that seems to tip-toe along whilst at the same time hitting it out of the park. My WOTN.

Gareth's N Rhone vs SA Syrah; 6/3/2023-6/4/2023 (La Cabotte): Lovely stuff - a treat to taste. In its pomp now, although I think it has a way to go. Very balanced - I'm not sure that I would have called it as new world blind? My 3rd favourite wine of the night, the table's first.

Syrah Battle: Northern Rhone vs South Africa (Cabotte): Popped and poured. This was a lovely wine. The soft, truffley nose was open and attractive but slightly subdued. The palate had the same airy and unassuming nature, with dark fruit, blood and iron and a subtle grip, the overall effect being cool, mineral, precise and compelling. Group WOTN (but I rated it third behind the more demonstrative Peroline and Columella).
