  • Saturday get-together: Where there are suitable lime, lemon, grass, and kiwi flavors offering a degree of pleasure here, I am just not getting much in the refreshing department. The finish is significant the same way Blockbuster video is still significant, with little uptick to hold interest and go in for another sip. It’s just not really there; it is inspiring as something to drink before you move on to the other wines that will be (or, better be!) more captivating. I like to geek-out on Sauvignon Blanc and some of the unique flavors that can rise from the different versions of the varietal, but bottom line it’s gotta be lively and refreshing, otherwise, what’s the point of Sauvignon Blanc?!

A kinda ok-ish showing that quite frankly was a shrugging-up-one-shoulder humdrum exercise for me. ‘Meh’ applies here. The 2016 is great. This 2017 is… [insert whatever synonym best describes listening to C-SPAN].

  • New friends, new wines in Novato: Reminiscent of the NZ SBs I am keen on but with slightly subdued tropical notes of pineapple and melon. Went well with the raw oysters. Still prefer the NZ SBs in this category.

  • An evening with good food, great people and amazing wine (Where the silence is longed for): Aromas of stone in a pond, clean and stale straws, a bit of claw, a soft tropical fruit note. An undertone of mineral notes, yellow fruits and some grass. I wish this had just a touch more acidity on the palate to help lift and push the flavors a bit, this seemed just a bit flat.

  • Kiwi, lime, grapefruit, lemon verbena, and acacia notes make for Sauvignon Blanc typicity with an added floral component that offers an extra tick of interest. Medium bodied, with a mid-palate that skirts a full drop in the depth department but still invigorates with persistent acidity and drive. Finishes relatively smooth with a mild pop of lemon juice on the tail.

Though I find this 2017 to be light years behind the insanely gorgeous 2016, there is certainly immediate pleasure to be had. Drink now.

  • My first experience with the 2017. I went through quite a bit of the 2016, but wanted to see how this vintage compared.

Right off the bat, this seems to be very much in the same profile as the 2016, but maybe a bit less rambunctious. Whereas the 2016 came across as a big, round and viscous “super SauvBlanc”, this has all the qualities that made the 2016 great but more balanced. Extremely tropical on both the nose and palate. White peach, guava, key lime cake and some grapefruit. Definitely pick up the use of oak on the nose as it has that distinct character. The palate is big but not flabby. The oak use has this very rounded but with a good spine of acidity. Sea salted key lime pie, honeysuckle, and quite a bit of limestone on the finish. Enjoy now.
