  • Mutiliana makes three different wines from three different vineyards, all 100% Sangiovese, surrounding the town of Modigliana. This wine is from the vineyard named Ibbola. 500 masl, sandstone soil and the grapes sees a long ripening period and this vineyard is always picked last of the three, usually late October. Spontaneous fermentation with long maceration on the skins and careful extraction. Fermentation and aging takes places in cement tanks.

    Pale, ruby color.

Very pure and detailed nose showing bright red fruits, floral notes of rose and violet, mint and sage, wet rocks and a touch of moist soil.

Medium bodied with fine tannins and a superb acidity that really carries the wine. Sleek mouthfeel with vibrant, bright cherry fruit. Great intensity to the flavors and long, blood orange-tinged, finish.

I tasted this wine blind and confidently called this high altitude Chianti Classico (Radda in Chianti) with Montevertine's Pian del Ciampolo in mind. I felt quite satisfied with my call and this is truly a beautiful Sangiovese with the same elegance and precision that I find in the wines of Montevertine for example. I highly recommend you to seek this out if you're a fan of the style. This was also my first Sangiovese from Modigliana which seems to be an up and coming area for Sangiovese.

Drinking very well right now but I can see this benefit from further aging.

  • Modigliana - Stella dell'Appennino (Modigliana (Forlì)): Part 2 Ibbola: a closed valley, with High altitude, poor soils of sandstone and wehere the grape must be collected very late in october. The wine is closed, just with some fruity and earthy hints and yet intriguing, with a good complexity also if not easy drink.
