My 18-month old daughter got to smell this before me as she woke up just as the wine was being dispensed from the Enomatic, so I thought I would give her first sniff. She seemed to like it, for what it’s worth.
The nose is classic Yquem but the 40+ years in the bottle has brought complexity and softened everything, including the acidity yet it remains vibrant and fresh in some respects.
The palate is more of the same - what it has lost in acidity, it has gained in depth and complexity - everything is softened but in a good way - it is splendid. It’s like falling asleep in your favourite chair in front of the fire. I felt this was the best Yquem I have ever had then I checked the vintage and apparently it was supposed to be lousy (and my god is it expensive in this shop!). I would actively seek this out at market prices. Seriously wonderful.

A private dinner (Restaurant Taiko, Amsterdam, NL): A very fine bottle, lively and fresh, candied fruit, lovely sweetness, moderate bitters, honey and a touch of passion fruit, pure and delicate, relatively dry finish, very good length. Better condition than the bottle tasted in 2021.
