I know that in an absolute sense this is not an exceptional wine. I’ve had other Negroamaro’s with greater complexity and flavor delineation. But it’s a very good wine, and I loved it from the start. Back about four vintages ago, this was my first Negroamaro. I was mostly drinking new world wines then, but I loved this from the start. It was shockingly different, but something about it just grabbed me — that mix of fruit forwardness backed up by lots of Old World funk — and a great value. I guess I’m still emotionally attached to it.
At this point the flavors are rich, if ill defined, but it’s smooth, nicely balanced, and still has good acidity and just a hint of tannins to see it through the finish. I’m giving it a solid (and mostly rational) 89.

Opened one hour in advance. Piney cherry aroma. Pure, clean flavors of sweet cherry and leather, tart cherry/lemon finish. Mature, elegant, firm backbone, some complexity, amazing value. Probably not going to get any better but no sign of immediate decline. Amazing value.

Amazing value for an interesting southern Italian DOC I’d never tried before. Some classic old world funk, super bright acidity and a bit of lingering fruit (after 10+ years in bottle), and a surprising blast of menthol/herbs that emerged after about 90 minutes of air. Has the whiff of an amaro, almost. Spectacular pairing with a pasta puttanesca.
For $17 at my local shop, I’m going to buy out their supply tomorrow.

Check it out now, the funk…is perfect with almost any Italian dinner. Bright, acidic, but also with interesting depth.

Really fun wine, juicy vibrant but with some nice aged funk and complexity that comes with 10+ years. Great value for what it is.
