Bright nose of sour cherry and fresh tomatoes, savoury dried meat and herbs with a touch of minerality. This needed some air for the aromatics to open up and harmonise. The palate is richer and rounded than what the nose suggested. Good depth and length in the medium-bodied and balanced structure. Some leather and gentle red fruits notes settled onto the supple texture, followed by a velvety and long linear finish. Surprisingly ready to drink straight out of the bottle with some breathing in the glass. Will continue to drink well for the next 5 years.

The second time I’ve had this, and my impressions are identical - this is fantastic. It has a richness and silkiness without weight or grip. Red fruited with a beautifully distinctive cherry liqueur note that Mazzei always seems to find, some sweet tobacco, tomato, violet, salumi and wild herbs. But it’s delicate for all those punchy notes, mid-weight and lets everything sing. I haven’t liked any 2018s in Tuscany but this one is a real exception.
18 months in 500L french oak, 50% new. Then 4 months in concrete and the remainder in bottle until release 3 years from vintage.
