I struggled with this bottle. In the end I believe the it was not stored properly and was unfortunately over the hill. Robe doesn’t show much age, maybe just a hint of garnet. Powerful nose with notes of funk, black olive, blackberry liquor, cassis, peony, dandelion, violet, smoke and some underlying prune (bad sign). Mouth is medium body with resolved tannins and acidity. Notes of Kirsh, violet, minerals, charcoal. Mid palate is underwhelming and lacks complexity in the finish. Gave it 91 points for the complexity of the nose and attack, but I’m sure there is a bottle of effect as I can’t imagine a wine with this pedigree lacking mid palate and finish.

Very impressive. Some of the signature mineral elements of Cayuse, but this showed a fair amount of refinement as well. Seems to be at peak with several more years to go.

Americana + James Bond Dinners and Ang and Adrian’s; 11/18/2022-11/19/2022 (Byron Bay): A revelation and the overachiever of the night. The trademark funky nose wasn’t overwhelming and underneath it was a complex, powerful, elegant wine with dark fruits, meatiness, olives and sweet spices. By popular acclaim bested the Harlan, although not quite as popular as the Screaming Eagle.

Not the best bottle of this. Perfect provenance, but just not showing much. Meager blueberries and blackberries on the nose and palate. Tannin resolved. Just not the deeply complex and interesting wine I've enjoyed on other occasions. Even enough left for day two, but it was no better. One experienced taster (but not of this wine) tagged it as WOTN, out of 18 wines. I had it half way down the list. I'll drink my other vintages sooner.
