The last of the vertical and probably the least desirable. This one had some heat but it was well balanced by its maturity and completeness. Always a treat to pop an old ravenswood. They age gracefully and can do so for decades.

This 12 year old Zinfandel not only had no flaws or deterioration. It was a strong candidate for the greatest Zin in a side by side pouring of 14 current release Zins. Pitch black with an inch pour with a thin outer ring that was lighter. The smell was invitingly concentrated and fruity. The sip was rich, full bodied, caressingly velvety, and mouth filling with no detached sugar sweetness, raisin taste, or heaviness. The wine has enough acidity and tannin to be drying, refreshing, and cleansing without anything sour, astringent, or rough. Overall, one of the most rewarding Zins to age, largely reflecting the great quality of the Tedeschi Vineyard, and the skill of Ravenswood in making Zin as seriously concentrated and well structured as Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.

My suggestion is to drink these up soon! Last of a full case, this has lost its verve and is quite fruit poor. Still a bit of structure hanging on, and quite dry (i.e., not jammy at all).

Subdued nose, lots of tannins, going past it prime. Drink up.
