Tasting Training for WSET Level 4, Units D4 + D5 - Session 3 (blind): Wine 3: The wine has a pale lemon colour. The nose has low intensity. The aromas are simple and difficult to identify, and seem to include primary characteristics of green fruit (apple) and citrus (lemon) as well as secondary characteristics of light biscuit, bread dough, toast and yeast.
On the palate the wine is dry, with medium(+) acidity, medium alcohol and a light body. The flavour intensity is medium(-), flavours mostly mirror the nose and include green fruit (apple) and citrus (lime) as well as secondary characteristics from autolysis like biscuit, toast, bread dough and yeast. The mousse is comprised of big bubbles and perceived as coarse. The finish is short and bitter, with a sour and bitter aftertaste, the acidity is disharmonious.
This wine is of acceptable quality since it does not have any major flaws, and since it shows both primary and secondary characteristics and thus has some complexity, even if the overall impression is "simple", in particular on the nose. To be considered being of good quality the wine would need to be less bitter, and would need better complexity, better integration of the acidity, and greater length.
The wine is ready to drink. It does not have enough fruit concentration to improve in bottle but would most like lose the little fruit it has and become disjointed. The wine is hence not suitable for further ageing in bottle.
NB: After hitting two homeruns with the first two wines, I was totally lost and took a wild guess (cheap Crémant de Bourgogne). Turned indeed out to be a blend of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and some Pinot Meunier, but is far from being from Burgundy, obviously. €28 retail, one of the worst QPRs I have come across.

Pale straw with nice bead. Fresh nose with a hint of sweetness. Clean style, mouth-filling but light yeast treatment. Lemon flavours run through the palate, but with an overlay of crisp Granny Smith apples. Nicely made, elegant and refreshing NZ bubbles.

Pale lemon yellow in colour and lively mousse. Crisp apple on the nose, dry crisp and fresh with green fruit and a little nuttiness. Good balance and great mouthfeel.
Very good sparkling wine

Horribly sweet with little balancing acidity. Not flawed just not very pleasant experience!
