Phil's Birthday tasting (Phil's place, Putney, Sydney): From Coravin. Funky, slightly stinky farmyard, oxidised, caramel, prunes, volatile acidity, tar. The palate is positively porty initially, alcohol is quite jarring, then plenty of grippy tannins, there is a spirituous quality which puts me in mind grand marnier and plenty of volatility on the palate as well. Nah.

A nice but not special bottle of well-made, more modernist Barolo. What's really notable is that at the time I bought this, these kinds of solid wines that represented a style pretty well could be had for $23 bottle.

Much better than the bottle I had some years ago; this was a nice surprise. Followed a 2003 Montevetrano, a wholly other wine, sharing only the vintage with the Seghhesio. Decanted for 90 minutes; lots of sediment. An excellent Barolo at this stage of its life. Drink within a year or two.

Neutral not because the wine is poorly made or unpleasant. I enjoyed it. But the style is no longer to my taste. Rotor fermenters. Short maceration. Barrique. A plush, well structured wine. But lacking typicity.
