  • 1990 Barolo dinner (Lafiandra, Singapore): A bit rustic, but fairly enjoyable. The nose was earthy and funky, with notes of meat and sous bois, cooked cherries and berries, and just a little ring of smoke and rose petals. Really attractive. Unfortunately, the palate, while similarly attractive in tone, was rather a little drier and less giving than the nose promised, with juicy acidity and then a chew of warm spice and a drape of tannins laced around a core of dark cherry fruit, with a tail of spice and a earth. Lacked a bit of complexity, and the finish was just a touch woody and drying, giving the wine a rustic feel at the end, but otherwise quite enjoyable. This may have been better a few years back.

  • Opened for dinner tonight - my last bottle.

Roasted red & black fruit, along with a dash o' funk on an interesting nose.

This comes across as lighter-bodied than the '98 Conterno, but still has decent acidity and a lengthy finish. Not as complex a wine, but still drinking well at this time.

  • Opened for dinner later today.

Translucent ruby in the glass, with roses and cherry fruit on the nose - pretty nose.

Tart cherry fruit hits the palate - a little thin in the mid-palate, but decent persistence. Good supporting acidity - a little edgy on opening, but a feature that will probably smooth out when accompanied by some food. All in, not bad.

  • Reference my prior notes from 2014 and 2013. This was drinking very similarly. The aromas of this wine are borderline spectacular. I love it. It does need about 40 minutes in the glass to smooth out on the finish, which starts a little short and angular. After that time it is drinking fairly perfectly throughout. Not the most complex effort on the palate and finish, but that nose makes it all worth it!
