  • Two bottles with severe mold on the corks and the cork pushed through (I tried to open them without the proper tool). Both corked. Bummer.

  • Thought this showed beautifully. Great acidity, freshness, petrol nose, some honeysuckle on the palate. Aging gracefully and should continue to do so.

  • Showed so young, great petrol, great tart fruit, puckery and floral, solid finish, very enjoyable wine

  • A black, moldy cork (at least for 1/3rds of the cork). Lighter in color than my previous bottle, absolutely stunning nose, but slightly less intense on the palate than previously. This does develop with air, and can age for quite a while longer due to the strong acidic backbone. This really feels young still. It has lovely notes of peach and apricot, white flowers, lime, a medium + finish. Could perhaps have been a 93 pointer.

  • AP 3 560 027 3 97, ie. "AP 3" submitted in 1997 - not to be confused with the other 1994 Ritsch Spätlese bottlings in the market, including 5 97 (AP 5 submitted in 1997) and 3 96 (AP 3 submitted in 1996). 9% alcohol.

Surprisingly youthful neon yellow-green color. The nose feels intense and moderately evolved with aromas of lemon marmalade, some beeswax, a little bit of saffron, light mushroomy notes of dried parasol mushroom, a hint of wet rocks and a touch of decomposing wood. The wine feels crisp and somewhat sweet on the palate with a light-to-medium body and somewhat evolved flavors of sharp lemony citrus fruit, some saffron tones, a little bit of shoe polish, light earthy notes, a hint of key lime marmalade and a dull touch of mushroomy funk. The crisp acidity makes the wine feel pretty incisive and keeps most of the sweetness well at bay. The finish is crisp, lively and quite mineral with a medium-sweet aftertaste of lemony citrus fruits and steely minerality, some sharp Granny Smith apple tones, a little bit of saffron, light sweeter notes of key lime marmalade, a funky hint of parasol mushroom and a touch of dull earthiness.

A crisp, intense and remarkably youthful effort for a Riesling Spätlese clocking in at almost 30 years of age. However, there was a somewhat dull, funky and slightly musty undertone that distracted from pleasure. Some said the wine was mildly corked because of this funky, somewhat mushroomy and a bit earthy note, but to me, the wine was remarkably vibrant and fruity - which is something you wouldn't expect a corked wine to show. I, too, thought that there was something slightly wrong with the bottle due to this subtly musty nuance, which is why I'm leaving the wine without a score. I'm not sure what was going on here, but I'm pretty sure the wine wasn't show like this - or if it did, I'm disappointed. Without that funky, musty note this would've been a 93-94 pt. effort.
