Bright ruby, only slightly browning edge. Sweet blackberry layered with hawthorn. Very deep and structured. Apparently NSG-like. However, the acidity is holding up amazingly and integrated well. No sign of roughness that found in many 88'. Refined.

More Wine, Less Delta (Osteria Langhe): My first encounter with 1988 Meo. I wanted to like this much more than I did. It had many of the desired components Vosne spice-filled black cherry, supple textures to the fruit, nice balancing freshness and remaining sweetness. But the overall integration was lacking and the wine felt a bit angular. Tantalizing but not quite great.

Dinner at Osteria Langhe (Chicago, IL): The rumour, I believe, is that this is one of the last Jayer wines at Méo-Camuzet. In any case, this is a wine that feels very true to the vintage. Red fruit (still moderately fresh) with some modest spice notes as well. The midpalate and finish are a little disappointing after the sweet fruit, because it thins out and there is too much tannin and acidity for the actual flavour that remains.

Very structured with cherry, dark fruit, blood and iron. Solid backbone with good acidity while showing the terroir’s rusticity. Missing the sweetness on the palate. A very good NSG while I’m not sure if it is “Jayer”. Overshadowed by a phenomenal 89 Meo Brulees.

Filtered Jayer wine that leaves to be a bit more angular. Signature spicy Jayer nose, a little funky, lots of red fruit and acid, citrus, minerals, violets, stem, oak, dust, blood, array of spices. On the palate favorably rustic, so pure and energetic, yet with a slightly bitter acidic finish. Elegant and mature. 94
