White/yellow peach, pear, melon and apricot on the nose. Close to medium bodied (8.5% ABV) with white peach and rounded white apple upfront. Mid-body adds additional density as well as yellow peach and honeydew melon. Light touch of sweetness here, but balanced neatly by tart citrus notes on the back along with nice acidity for an almost 12 year old wine. These structural and contrasting notes really make the wine as they provide definition to the fruit and balance to the wine overall. In a very good spot currently and has the elements to hold this level for several more years.

This was bottled under screw cap. I opened the bottle and served it with a Thanksgiving style turkey dinner. The wine showed incredible freshness and zing for a 7 year old. I'm wondering if the screw cap closure also somehow slowed the aging process. Nevertheless the result was quite good as Riesling especially ones which carry an extra bit of residual sugar like Sellbachs do can sometimes come off as a bit flabby as the hit this age. The sweetness was certainly evident but there was enough zip to balance the wine. As such, the flavors were all in the honey and tropical fruit spectrum.

(Selbach-Oster Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Spätlese) ($30.00) 100% sponti, from the rockiest soil near the cliffs; just a stunning Mosel classic, yet with a wild spice, like walking into a Penzey’s; firm and even adamant slatey spine, a steel rod of limey terroir below shimmering fruit.
