  • Waited almost two years to the day to take down the last of these. I'm actually quite shocked at my willpower. I know I have had my hands on this bottle at least a dozen times in that period. This wine is right at the top of the hill, starting to descend down the back side. But man, what a wine. Acidity is still very much present, with tannin on the finish also still very present. A bouquet of blackberries, fig, tobacco leaf, hint of black olive. Hint of gravelly soil terroir. Really robust wine that does not finish overly extracted or jammy. Wishing I had a lot more of this.

  • Firing. On. All. Cylinders. Wine was purchased about 3.5 years ago in a six-pack and was intended to be consumed rather fast. Back story: ran into a 12 pack of 2005 "Prima Voce" close to 10 years ago at about 10 bucks per bottle and was told it was "ok" for an Italian blend but it wouldn't last longer than a year or so (but noone knew for sure). It. Killed. Come to realize the only reason it was available readily in the states was because Kendall Jackson acquired them. Fast forward about 6 years from that and requested to find this one. Today, Arceno is still under the KJ umbrella. Have slowly been drinking on the ones I found a few years ago. This wine is rather aromatic even from Coravin. Dirty raspberry, grilled meat, Italian spice. Medium + density and mouthfeel. Acidity has died down quite a bit, as has the sweetness on the front, allowing a floral dirty raspberry (not as much blackberry) to show up front, leathery and "bloody" in the middle. Finishes with some brambly herb, green olive, and a hint of black pepper spice. This wine is RIGHT at the top of the hill now. There are many 12 year old Chiantis that I would gladly pass on, but this one is a definite "yes please" even at 12 years of age.

  • Found this one behind another one in storage, purchased about 2.5 years ago. It's sad that I had to hide this one with the intent of hiding it away well enough to come back to it about a year later. Well, it's a year later!
All I can say is....DAMN. This drinks like a Sangiovese that I paid 3x the amount for. Dense cedar and a little sweet blackberry. Smooth operator on the front and finish. A part of me is very sad this one was bought out by Kendall Jackson but I hope they kept their identity intact into the more recent years. Lilac and pepper finish. Immense. LOVED this wine. Almost gave it 95 but not quite there. I wish I had another case of this one! Quite enjoyable tonight with pizza, and has the longevity to go another 5-6 years quite easily.

  • Three more in storage, as this is probably the safest scenario. This wine isn't overly complex, but is more complex than I expected and still on the youthful side. A little thicker than I was expecting for a chianti, but I think this one was like this last time. Acidity on the front and the finish, but attenuated. This one is holding rather strong, and will keep the other 3 bottles in storage for the next year before revisiting!

  • I think this wine is rated sub-90 by many because it's a little misunderstood. I have noticed that many Chianti Classico wines come in quite a bit hot, a little "airy fairy" and quite a bit raspberry bomb-ish (either with some bramble or no bramble at all). This wine has always been deep, dark, haunting, and muddy. Still have two 05 PrimaVoce bottles that cost me less than 10 bucks each. The next year, Kendall Jackson buys out the Tenuta and now the cost is 32 bucks. Sigh..... Cork popped to a dark purple-black stain on the cork. Poured to glasses and allowed to air for 30. Nose was boysenberry and earthy loam. Palate was deep, dark, hint of acid on the front, but boysenberry and graphite on the front. The mid-palate was actually quite fleshy and full with a hint of green olive. This wine could stand up to steak with bernaise!! The finish was oaked, and very high tannin. This wine hasn't fully integrated yet, and I look forward to seeing how it develops over the next 7-10 years. This one is NOWHERE near done yet. End of drink date at 2016 is WAY off. More like 2024.
