Expressive nose of coffee, cocoa, tobacco. A long, distinctive finish, with licorice tones. Definitely a very interesting wine. Still had some life in it, especially compared to the earlier 1964 St. Joseph. Allegedly, 1974 was a poor vintage for Chateauneuf, but my wife said "if this was a bad vintage I'd hate to taste what a good one tastes like".

Perhaps because it is from a half bottle, the fruit is very subtle and not terribly expressive. A lot less impressive than the 66 Mag had about a couple years ago.
