  • 2002 Bordeaux 20 years on tasting (Fribourg): 2002 Bordeaux 20 years on tasting. Key takeaways: 1/ 31 out of 32 wines were in flawless condition which indicates either luck or less bottle variation in the vintage, 2/ On average still early days with the fruit predominantly primary, 3/ solid hedonistic quality with only few laggards, but also no blow-outs, 4/ structures built on both tannin and acidity, but common mid-palate weakness, 5/ best wines were Valandrau, Palmer and a surprise underdog Lagrange (all 95), 6/ biggest disappointment was a cooked Figeac (87). Tasting note:
Dark and blue berries with lots of intensity behind, candy-like sweet notes and a bit of earth, tree bark and just a whiff of menthol. Firm structure, harmonious but young with grippy tannin and a brighter, almost red type of fruit. One of the stronger wines in the vintage.

  • Dark fruit, earth and alcohol on the nose. Felt tight and unopened, even after decanting. Good structure, solid tannins, some mild dark fruit, woody vanilla, tobacco. All the elements are there, and overall a good wine but this one left us mildly disappointed. For a 20yr old Grand Cru we were expecting more. Either it’s just where it’s going to be in terms of life/flavor, or it’s got many years ahead of it, perhaps both are true.

  • Nose: 93, Palate: 91. Tasted blind and included as a Bordeaux 'ringer' in a line-up of Pahlmeyer Proprietary Reds and Merlot wines. Correctly guessed as the ringer by the majority of the tasters and a good match in the line-up.

  • Surpise surprise. In a flight with Pavie, Latour, Haut Brion and Cos, this one stood his ground. And, in an OK vintage. Extremely elegant, creamy and full. Not over complex as e.g. the 2010, but very round with class, elegance and power. Sexy MF. Top wine from Mister Bordeaux!

  • Nose took some time to open up, but blossomed nicely after 2-3 hours (A-). Palate is excellent, but not outstanding (B++).
