Very evolved colour, almost rusty-brown. Also old on the nose and in the mouth. Gets a bit better when open for a long time but it is clearly past. But the wine does still have nice texture and no harsh tannins. I'm sure this is a very good Barolo when at the right age. I just waited too long to finish my bottles; 3 more left.

Menthol on the nose when initially opened…decanted and sat an hr. Wasn’t super giving on 1st taste and even was somewhat dry on finish. However with a bit more air and time opened nicely with warm red fruit and a soft, mature finish. Had a glass with beef rib stew but have to say I preferred the wine better as a stand-alone.

The '96 San Rocco comes across as a clearly modern, but enjoyable, Barolo drinking around peak. The nose was dark, with black, slightly dried fruit, sweet baking spices, smoke, menthol, and a hint of balsamic. On the palate, the wine was a bit less powerful than I expected based on the aromatics, with a mid-weight texture, which caused the slightly grainy, still noticeable tannins and sharp acidity level to stick out a bit. The fruit profile on the palate was lighter than the nose with dark red fruit and spices. The finish was fairly short, emphasizing red fruit and menthol along with the sharp acidity level of the wine. The aromatics of the '96 San Rocco were ultimately much more interesting than the palate, and so I found the wine enjoyable but a bit out of balance.

A bit more fragile and less intact than the 5/13 bottle but still a delicious old Barolo.

Similar to the 3/13/18 bottle.
